It was 25 years ago today that New York City’s World Trade Center towers fell after two hijacked airplanes struck them 17 minutes apart. On Sept. 11, 2001, Michael Arad, a Georgia Tech graduate, watched the events unfold from his Manhattan apartment. The industrial design alumnus would later design the memorial that now stands at ground zero.

Twenty-five years later, 9/11 is increasingly a historical event for students rather than a lived memory. But many still recall where they were and what they felt on Sept. 11, 2001. Among them are Tech graduate Michael Arad, who designed the 9/11 memorial in New York City; Philip Breedlove, who was in his office at the Pentagon; and Kelly Griendling, who was a first-year student on campus.
