The Good Morning Indian Country team was invited to be the official live stream for the KU FNSA Powwow and Indigenous Cultures Festival. Shia Blackcloud interviewed Ron McKinney with the Haskell Stickball Club. Other interviews include Lori Hasselman (KU Powwow Committee), Jancita Warrington (Powwow Manager and Native Liaison to Governor Laura Kelly), Melissa Peterson (KU Powwow Committee) among others. Some of these interviews were streamed to the Good Morning Indian Country Facebook page, and all of them will be posted to the page in edited form in the coming week.

Matthew Petillo selected as KU's White House Correspondent Association scholarship recipient |

JMC School junior Matthew Petillo is KU's White House Correspondent Association scholarship recipient, according to a press release by the WHCA. Petillo, who is the editor-in-chief of the University Daily Kansan, will travel to Washington, D.C., this week to be honored at a luncheon and program on April 26 and will be a guest of the WHCA at its annual dinner on April 27. The scholarship is awarded to promising student journalists at WHCA partner colleges and universities across the country. Petillo has also been assigned a mentor from the White House press corps and will receive one year of mentoring.
Petillo was also recently selected to the Dow Jones News Fund Intern Class of 2024. He was selected from more than 1,000 applicants for this honor and is the only selection from Kansas. As part of the program, Petillo will attend the Investigative Reporters and Editors Data Journalism Program from May 27 to June 2 in Columbia, Mo.

Free Expression on the Hill will occur on April 23 at 5 p.m. in the Kansas Union’s Jayhawk Room. Students will collaborate on scenarios that reveal the tensions of free expression with Richard Levy from KU Law and discuss how exercising free expression impacts mental health with Ash Wilson from the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX. The workshop aims to clarify KU policies around topics such as guest speakers, counter-protests, and postings but also encourage thinking about the limitations, benefits, and intricacies that accompany free expression. Please RSVP in advance to attend.
The Office of Faculty Affairs invites faculty at all ranks and classifications to take a day (or several) to reflect on their strengths, anticipate challenges, grow in their skills, and learn something new before summer takes off from May 13-17. Faculty Development Academies are day-long intensives, focused on a particular topic, giving faculty time to delve deep and develop a core capacity in a chosen area.
Participants are welcome to register for as many dates as they’d like. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided. All Academies Days take place on the Lawrence Campus. Please register by Monday, May 6. Learn more about each day and register at this link.
Travel Fair for KU faculty and staff is Thursday: KU faculty and staff are invited to the first annual KU travel fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the Kansas Room on the sixth floor of the Kansas Union. It is a come and go event. Attendees will learn about rental car and airline contracts, have the opportunity to sign up for perks and promotions and can view a live demo of the Concur booking tool. The event also features free food, vendor table giveaways and a chance to win door prizes.

Associate Professor Emeritus Max Utsler attended his 41st Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Convention April 13-16 in Las Vegas. Chris Bacon, a KU JMC doctoral graduate and current associate professor at Middle Tennessee State University, was one of the presenters at the convention. Utsler was a multi-year board member and president of the organization in 2012. He is a member of the Past President's Council and was one of the founders of the Sports Division. The annual convention, which started 70 years ago, is held in conjunction with the National Association of Broadcasters.

Matt Hoffman won first place in the Iowa Broadcast News Association Awards for an in-depth story on a South Dakota business owner who helped stop a multi-state scam. The business owner, a furniture salesman, stopped a scam that targeted a woman with dementia. Hoffman is a reporter for KTIV News 4 in Sioux City, Iowa.
