Let’s keep moving toward digital accessibility
Our shared commitment to accessibility remains strong |
The federal compliance deadline is April 24, 2027, and we're making good progress.
Since spring 2025:
|
-
Around 900 people from 80 academic departments and several offices participated in accessibility workshops with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.
- Nearly 80 individuals, from nearly every school and college and a handful of offices, signed up for more than 100 individual consultations.
- CELT's team has remediated more than 1,400 PDFs.
|
Thank you for your dedication and commitment to helping our entire community access all that Stony Brook has to offer.
|
Remember: Anything that is available digitally on April 24 needs to be accessible.
The university expects that all course content will be compliant by the start of the spring semester. That's January 25, 2027, for most of campus; some health sciences programs start earlier.
|
So let's refresh what you learned from last year's Approachable Accessibility messages:
|
- Formatting text and URLs;
- Building ordered and bulleted lists;
- Crafting alt text and long descriptions;
- Checking color contrast; and
- Using headings.
|
You may also want to refresh your memory, or get up to speed if you're new to SBU, with CELT's Digital Resource Guides.
|
We know questions remain - there are still programs and software, including some that are industry standards, that aren't accessible. We are working across CELT, Division of Information Technology, Office of Equity and Access, Procurement, Stony Brook Libraries, our partners at the State University of New York, and others to find answers to these lingering and critical questions. We will share updates as we learn more ourselves.
