Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Tonight's updates:
| |
| State Champions – Please join me in congratulating the young men of John Marshall HS who won the VHSL Class 2 Boys State Championship on Saturday! The Justices finished the season undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation. These young men are champions on and off the court, and they're led by the equally impressive Coach White and Principal Murray. As Principal Murray would say: "We love you and there's nothing you can do about it!"
| |
| Teacher Job Fair – Interested in joining the RPS team, or know someone who is? Don't miss our virtual hiring events tomorrow, March 14, and Thursday, March 16! To register, just scan the QR code below with your phone's camera. To apply for a position, just visit our website.
| |
| Arts in Our Schools Spotlight – Last Friday, hundreds of RPS students, staff, families, and community partners were treated to the critically acclaimed performance Off the Wall and Onto the Stage – a ballet bringing to life 22 paintings by renowned artist Jonathan Green, whose bold, vibrant works of art depict the lifestyles and landscapes of his Gullah community. Enormous gratitude to the James River Valley (VA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and The Links Foundation, Incorporated for donating the tickets!
| |
| Volunteer Support – We still need a few volunteers to support Teen Summit RVA this Saturday, March 18, from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Please consider signing up!

| With great appreciation,
Jason

- A huge shout-out to Andrew Miles, Huguenot High School band & strings director, for being the guest conductor of our Elementary All-City Band at the Fine Arts Festival this year! Your energy and demeanor with the kids is so much fun to witness! And thank you to you and the rest of the Huguenot team for allowing us to use your school for this event!
- Thank you to everyone who helped out with the Elementary All-City Band this year at our Fine Arts Festival! And a special shout-out to Binford Middle School's band director, Richard Rebmann, who spent most of his day helping our students get ready for their performance!
- The RPS elementary orchestra teachers would like to send a huge shout-out to Katherine Baker, orchestra teacher at River City Middle School. Ms Baker did a tremendous job conducting the All-City Orchestra students at the Fine Arts Festival. The students learned how to play musically and as an ensemble under her skillful direction.
- Ms. Martin’s and Mrs. B’s preschool students performed at the MLK Celebration at MLK Middle School. The young ones stole the show with dancing and rhythm sticks.
- I would like to give a big shout-out to the custodial staff at Maymont Preschool, Mr. May and Mr. White. They make sure our building is always clean. They come in early and stay late just to make sure students and staff are good. Maymont appreciates them so much!!
- I want to send out a big shout-out to the many hands that joined together to make the 2023 RPS Fine Arts Festival a success. Thank you to Mr. Gilstrap and the Huguenot High School admin and fine arts teams; Richard Farquharson, Brukisha Corbin, and the care and safety associates; Ms. Smith and the custodial crew; Mary Gresham, Damone Harris, and the facilities team; Matthew Stanley, Tamika Massie, Lorena Arias, and the advocacy and outreach team. Big shout-out and a huge thank you to Julz Suder and the RPS visual art, music, dance and theatre teachers for your daily sacrifice and support for your talented students. Thank you to Judy Deichman and the Lit Limo team; and Stefanie Ramsey, Jasmine Williams, and the many principals, teachers and school staff that came out to support their fine arts teachers and students. Last but not least, a big shout-out goes to our community arts partners, VMFA, Studio Two Three, Oakwood Arts, VisArts Center, Art 180, James River Art League, LaMonica McFarland, and the Choir Psi Phi National Music Society-Richmond Chapter. Shout-out to everyone who lent a helping hand to make the 2023 RPS Fine Arts Festival a success. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in March 2024.
- I want to commend the transportation team and Deidra Starkes for coordinating the efforts needed to transport all of the folks to the ballet yesterday! They put in the work while simultaneously having an early morning professional development training for drivers. I am very grateful to have a team that can come together and make things happen!
- Christie-Jo Adams, art education coordinator, is a true Wonder Woman that I am honored to work beside every day. Without her leadership and vision, the return of the amazing annual Fine Arts Festival would not be possible. There are so many unseen steps that this leader takes to make sure her team can be center stage and their students can be in the spotlight. Congratulations to the entire Fine Arts Team on their hard work and thank you to Christie-Jo for leading the way!
- A great, big shout-out to Debra Carlotti for continuing to look for ways to help the students at Munford. She is always on the lookout for resources for teachers and ways to implement best practices. Ms. Carlotti rolls up her sleeves and gets down in the trenches with the teachers to practice what she preaches. Thank you, Ms. Carlotti, for your unending determination to help students and teachers alike!
- There aren’t words good enough to describe how important Natasha Thomas is to the Southampton community. She works with students. She helps to train staff, especially the exceptional education staff. She facilitates IEP meetings. She brainstorms with teachers and administration to find solutions to help all students and staff. She is always available to other ICCs if they have questions or as a thought partner. Thank you so much, Ms. Thomas, for your constant support for students, teachers, and families of RPS!
- I'd like to shout-out our Titan STEM scholars at MLKMS for their hard work this week as they began testing their first prototypes from an engineering project, specifically 8th graders, Melquan Simmons and Jahkee Cotman. Our Titans open new doors of opportunity through STEM each day, and we could not be more proud!
- Shout-out to Ms. Greenshields, CIS Coordinator at Swansboro Elementary!
- Sending an enormous thank you to Christie-Jo Adams and Julz Suder for organizing the amazing Fine Arts Festival! Their tireless efforts were so appreciated by students, parents, teachers and administration! There is currently student artwork all over our art-loving city in celebration of Youth Art Month! Main Library, VCU, VisArts and Art Works!! These women collected and hung the art in these venues, representing almost all of RPS schools! Again, thank you!!
- Shout-outs to MLK Preschool's rhythm and movement class who performed at MLK Middle School’s Black History Celebration.

| - Shout-out to the preschoolers in Ms. Martin and Ms. B.'s class at MLK Preschool that chose to teach meditation to fellow students during recess time.
