AUSTRALIAN KOALA FOUNDATION
October 2016
In this month's newsletter, we'd like to highlight some key events from Save The Koala Month (September) and share some of what the AKF has been up to in October.
Some brand new Save The Koala Shop items are featured at the end, so don't forget to scroll down!
We hope you had a great October, Koala lovers.

One month later...

On Friday, September 30th, 2016's official Save The Koala Day, the Australian Koala Foundation hit the streets of Brisbane to see how much people love Koalas - the response was overwhelming!
Save The Koala Day 2016
I just loved watching our new video from Save the Koala Month this year. It was truly hilarious and just look how the people loved meeting KD (the name of our Koala suit) on the streets of Brisbane!

Lorraine's Save The Koala Tour 2016

Lorraine with students from Nagoya Communications Arts Japan (NCA)

Nagoya Communications Arts Japan (NCA) has been a supporter of the Australian Koala Foundation for many years. Once again, the AKF was included in the itinerary for their trip ‘down under’ and I was thrilled to be asked to speak to the students in September. Fortunately, Nick Kawaguchi was on hand again to translate for me. Thanks so much to the team at ICTE UQ for all their help on the day too.

This year, 88 students travelled to Indigicapes at Redlands to learn about the work of the AKF. Dave, our Landscape Ecologist, provided me with an updated map of the area which showed the students the enormous difference in the landscape between 1788 and 2016. The Koala sightings in the area have dropped significantly over the last 6 years due to the infrastructure and housing which now surround the Indigi area.

Tree Planting

400 year old Tallowwood Tree
A big thank you to Jeanette and her team at Indigi who made us most welcome. Lisa organised the Students in planting koala food trees and companion plants, while Ruth took the students on a tour of the Indigi area. This is a magnificent 400 year old tallowwood that had been hit by lightning 200 years ago and is home to huge number of species of wildlife and birds.
Save the Koala Month is always the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about the plight of the koala as well as funds to help the AKF carry on its work.
On behalf of the NCA Students, Moeri Funahashi and Kaho Minamikawa made a presentation of funds which they had raised over the past twelve months. From the whole team at the AKF, I’d like to say thank you to them and to everyone who contributed to the donation.

Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA)

Rights of Nature Tribunal

The Australian Koala Foundation was proud to take part in AELA's recent Rights of Nature Tribunal, organised by Dr Michelle Maloney of the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA).

Our maps were featured in presentations by Susie Russell from the North East Forest Alliance and Jess Beckerling from the Western Australian Forest Alliance, for the Forests of Australia case. The Koala was also a prominent figure and topic in the case.

Printed versions of our maps were also on display for Tribunal attendees to observe and study. We were delighted to see how much interest they received and to receive one delegate's comment that AKF maps cut straight through to the heart of the problem.

It was a priviledge to be part of the discussion.
We look forward to future Tribunals and AELA events.
