ASSISTED LIVING SUCCESS STORY

Nelzena (Noxie) Gilmer moved to the Kroontje Health Care Center in February of 2018 to receive skilled care following surgery.  Her determination and the dedication of staff there made it possible for her to heal successfully and move into our transitional level Assisted Living at the Willows. Noxie’s transformation started happening almost immediately once she moved to the Willows. At first, she was self-isolating and wanted to stay in her room all day, but with the encouragement and support from her family and nursing and life enrichment staff at the Kroontje Center, she began to take part in activities and socialize with her neighbors. “We saw something ignite within her,” says Jordan Benedict, Life Enrichment Manager.  It started with a painting class and grew with each new activity she tried. “We are proud to be a part of her recovery.  This is the best part of our job,” she adds.

ARTHRITIS AQUATICS

The occurrence of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis and gout are on the rise among the senior population. If you are looking for a way to relieve pain, join us each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at 10:30am for Arthritis Aquatics. This class consists of low-intensity exercises that promote optimum joint flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, coordination and balance. The soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water make it a safe, ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Arthritis Aquatics is also an option for those looking for a low-impact exercise program.

STEVE'S SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIP

This month’s tip for sustainable living is reducing the use of plastic grocery bags. With the exception of Aldi, most grocery stores (and most other retail stores), automatically bag all purchased items in disposable plastic bags, often using even more than necessary.

My wife and I had been using paper bags and reusable bags (when we remembered), but when we started using the grocery pick up service, we decided to do better.

We ordered collapsible bins that we use to transport the groceries. We request "No Bags" when we place our grocery pick up order and they transfer the groceries from their bins to ours when we pick up. Or, if I go in to do the shopping, I take a bin. Of course, reusable bags work great too...we just find that the bins work better for our family and amount of groceries.

Sustainably,

Steve Watkins, Production Manager
