Dear Parents and Families,

It is so hard to believe that we are in our last few weeks of the fall semester. We here in the Career Center have stayed busy, creating, organizing, and executing various programs over the course of the semester, two of which I would say I am personally quite proud of and would be happy to share with my own parents -- Government, Policy and Law Industry Night and Law Week. We held the latter during the week of November 4 - 8 and hosted 9 law schools, including University of Chicago Law School, Columbia Law School, and Yale Law School; this event culminated with the Boston Law School Forum, where over 150+ law schools were in attendance. (Come to think of it, I actually did share this good news with my own parents -- I guess we are never too old to share our happy and proud moments!)

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center

Helping Students Communicate the Value of Their Tufts Education

Over the course of their years at Tufts, students will encounter numerous situations where they’ll be asked to talk about what they’re learning and the skills they’re developing. And whether it’s speaking to a networking contact or a potential employer, they’ll want to be prepared to share the unique knowledge and experiences they bring. Help students prepare for these conversations by encouraging them to do the following:
  • Reflect on Competencies: From critical thinking to teamwork to leadership, students cultivate a variety of competencies during college. Our Competencies and Career Readiness page can help them examine which competencies they’ve already developed, as well as ways to continually strengthen others.
  • Create a Script: Following this reflection, students can craft short “elevator pitches” to introduce themselves. They’ll want to connect 1-2 aspects of their background with relevant career interests -- we talk more about this process in the networking section of the Tufts Career Guide (PDF).
  • Take Advantage of Self-Marketing Opportunities: Many Career Center events, such the January #Adulting Conference and Sophomore Career Summit, as well as our Spring Industry Nights, feature opportunities to converse with alumni and employers. Students can use these events to practice communicating what they’ve gained from courses, projects, internships, volunteering, activities, and more.

What's Happening Academically?

Winter Break and Academic Success

A four-week break from classes can be both a restful and productive time for students. Ideally, they will reflect on their fall semester. You can sit with them and review their grades and courses and ask them for their assessment of how the semester went. As they plan for the spring, they will be able to make changes to their course roster if it is warranted or desired. They can also prepare themselves for spring courses by doing any helpful review of materials or topics they have not seen for a while so they are ready from day one of the semester.
You can review with your student the resources on campus that can help them be successful – the Academic Resource Center, their instructors and TA’s, staff in Counseling and Mental Health or the University Chaplaincy, or their Advising Dean. If by chance they have an Incomplete in a course from the fall, they should do everything to complete it before new classes begin. Faculty and staff are accessible via email over the break as well.
