Action Alert to End Family Detention Once and for All
Last Friday, Judge Dolly Gee of the Central District of California ruled that current U.S. family detention policies violate a 1997 legal settlement known as the Flores Settlement. This is the second time that the courts have affirmed what we already know: family detention is wrong and must be ended now! The Obama Administration has until Monday to respond to Judge Gee--let's make sure they have heard from us first: comply with the ruling, do not appeal it, release women and children immediately, and close the three family detention centers once and for all.
Three Things YOU can do TODAY!
 Call your Representative
  • Ask them to sign on to Representative Lofgren's letter opposing family detention.
  • Many members are flying home for the August recess tonight, so we need to move quickly.
Call the White House at 202-456-1111
  • Feel free to use this sample script:
  • My name is _____ and I'm calling to encourage the Obama Administration to comply with Judge Gee's Flores decision and to close the Dilley, Karnes and Berks family detention centers. There is simply no humane way to incarcerate families. The revival of family detention is a failed policy, and an appalling stain on the United States’ human rights record. I urge the Administration to allow this decision to stand, release women and children immediately, and close all family detention centers once and for all.
