First Peoples Graduation Recognition Ceremony

Thursday, June 9, 3:00 pm, Longhouse

This annual community celebration recognizes Evergreen's graduating students of color. It's a wonderful time to rejoice, celebrate, and come together as a community to recognize the accomplishments of our graduating students. The program consists of a reception, music, acknowledgements, and speakers. If you would like to participate, please contact First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services at 360-867-6467, online at www.evergreen.edu/multicultural or by email.

Fall Registration Tips & Reminders

Before you head off for the summer, make sure you've finalized your registration for fall!

Are you only on waitlists or not registered for anything?
  • Get registered right away! Academic Advising can help you find a good fit! Call 360-867-6312 or stop by Library 2153.
Are you registered for something and on the waistlist for something else?
  • If you're registered for something and are on the waitlist for something else, make sure that you'd truly rather be in your waitlisted offering(s). When you get to the top of the waitlist, Registration will drop you from your registered program and add you into your waitlisted program. If you prefer to stay in what you're currently registered in, go into my.evergreen.edu right away and drop yourself from the waitlist.
Are you on more than one waitlist?
  • If you're on more than one waitlist, be sure to fill out the Waitlist Preference Form (here’s how). This is especially important if you're putting together an assortment of courses and/or part-time programs. Registration wants to make sure they put you into your preferred combo, but they won't know what that is unless you tell them.
Need to check your position on a waitlist?
  • You can always check your waitlist position by going to my.evergreen.edu -> Registration -> Student Registration Details.
Have additional questions or need help from Registration?
  • If you see anything about your registration that doesn't look correct, contact Registration right away!  Registration staff will be available all summer, Monday-Friday, from 9 to 5 at 360-867-6180 and registration@evergreen.edu.

Have You Made Your Accomodation Requests for Fall?

If you are eligible for accommodations through Access Services, don't forget to come by and meet with the Director to get your requests in for fall quarter.  Find out more about eligibility and documentation requirements at www.evergreen.edu/access/eligibility.htm

First Peoples Peer Support Advisor Wins Academic Statement Writing Contest

Dre Avila is this year's first place winner of the Academic Statement Writing Contest! Dre has been a Peer Support Advisor for First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services for the past four years. They will be graduating this spring with a B.A. focused on urban planning and cultural studies. Their experience in advising fellow students on scholarships and academic statements over the years helped shape their own writing voice. During their time at Evergreen, Dre also received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad, and was awarded the Cultural Diversity Award for two consecutive years. They also had the opportunity to be a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow under faculty Eric Stein. Their advice to students representing themselves while seeking funding or within their academic statement is "Stay grounded in your story and your goals while creating a narrative that lets your audience connect with you. There are incredible opportunities to shape an education on your own terms here at Evergreen, and these are great opportunities to showcase that work."  Congratulations Dre!

SASS Senior Student Staff Highlights

Student and Academic Support Services employs students in a variety of key roles. Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of just a few of our valued student staff members who are graduating this spring!
Roberto Hernandez arrived at Evergreen as a junior-level transfer student.  During his first year he enrolled in the Reservation Based Community-Determined Program. He also applied for and received a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship.  He used his Gilman scholarship to fund an independent study abroad internship in Bolivia examining the efficacy of indigenous social work programs.  Upon returning from Bolivia, Roberto became a TRiO Outreach and Retention Intern, and is currently providing support to his fellow TRiO students. After graduating this spring, Roberto will be moving to Bogota, Colombia, to be an assistant English teacher for high school students and is applying for the Peace Corps in order to continue teaching in Colombia.
Laura Nelson came to Evergreen from Minnesota as a conditionally-admitted student with a background in visual arts.  She has spent her time at Evergreen working across disciplines to refine her creative work and practice.  She spent time in Greece and Italy studying art history and, most recently, in New York City visiting artist studios, museums, galleries, and readings. Laura has served as a key member of the Peer Advising team in Academic Advising all three of her years at Evergreen.  She is graduating with an emphasis in interdisciplinary visual arts and plans to return to the Minnesota Twin Cities area and work in the arts community.
Jordan Strayer is originally from Maine and has worked in SASS for four years, first under the Associate Vice President then transitioned to his current role as Peer Advisor in Academic Advising.  His academic emphasis is in political economy and economics, with a minor emphasis in German studies. His research projects over the past two years have focused on the European Monetary Union (EMU) and the economics of the Euro. Jordan has been accepted to the Masters in International Affairs program at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany.  He will be moving to Berlin this August and will be sorely missed around SASS.

SASS Collaborates with Sustainable Work and Workplaces Program

This spring SASS collaborated with the Sustainable Work and Workplaces program lead by Helena Meyer-Knapp and Robert Knapp.  Students in the program studied the physical spaces and current uses of work areas in SASS. Their research culminated with impressive presentations outlining their visionary designs. Examples of their work will be on display through the end of Spring Quarter in the Career Resource Library, Library 2161 in SASS, starting Thursday, June 2nd. SASS will be implementing some of the suggested changes over the summer and will use these ideas to shape future plans for enhancing the SASS space. Thanks to the students and faculty for all their hard work!
