Tips for Grads: 5 reasons to check out DiscoverPD
DiscoverPD is the Graduate School's new professional development planning tool, designed for graduate students at all stages and in all programs. Here are five reasons you should give it a try.
  • You’ll get specific, customized action items. After you take the self-assessment, DiscoverPD shows you the areas where you consider yourself strongest and weakest, and recommends what you can do to grow in these areas.
  • It was developed with YOU in mind. Professional development specialists in the Graduate School combed through research, reports, and peer institutions’ examples to create the new professional development framework, on which DiscoverPD is built. Read more about the process here.
  • You will discover skills you didn’t even know you had. Graduate students and faculty have commented that the framework introduces a vocabulary to describe the numerous, employer sought-after skills developed through graduate study.
  • It sets you on a course for life-long professional development. This isn’t a checklist of things to do before you graduate. Rather, the nine areas of professional development are relevant throughout your career. Start good habits now, and think of professional development both as what helps you succeed academically and what prepares you for career success.
  • It’s a work in progress, and we need your contributions. There’s a database of opportunities behind DiscoverPD, and while it’s already pretty robust, it will get even better with more people contributing ideas. Want to suggest something? Email gspd@grad.wisc.edu.
DiscoverPD is an innovative tool for UW-Madison graduate students to advance their academic and professional goals. Start by reviewing the nine areas (or "facets") of professional development, complete a self-assessment, and get a customized report of your areas of strength and weakness as well as recommendations about resources and campus events to help you strengthen your ability in each area.
Starting with this edition of GradConnections, we will tag each event with the area(s) (or "facets") of professional development that it corresponds to:   Inquiry, Discovery, and Creation  |  Leadership  | Disciplinary Expertise and Interdisciplinary Connections     Career Development    Managing Projects and People   Communication     Inclusion & Diversity   Interpersonal Effectiveness  |  Personal Effectiveness

Three minutes to convey the gist of your research. Are you up to the challenge? Stepping back from the technical details to communicate the big-picture issues of your research is essential, whether you are competing for funding, interviewing for a job, or sharing your work with a relative. To practice this skill, participate in the third annual UW-Madison 3-Minute Thesis Competition, hosted by GWIS-Beta and co-sponsored by WARF and the Graduate School. The event is open to the public, with a reception to follow the competition. Competitors from STEM fields will have the opportunity to share their research in 3 minutes and one PDF slide. A panel of judges will evaluate participants on their presentation's comprehension, creativity, and engagement. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three speakers. Competitors must register here before Friday, December 2;  non-participant attendees can register at any time, here.
