D-CHIPP Director's Note

Change is constant. The temperatures have drastically changed since our last newsletter in August and, as expected every fall, many trees and shrubs are heading into their dormant season; their vibrant colors demonstrate how beautiful change can be. At DUSON, we are experiencing change as well. COVID restrictions are slowly lifting and our on campus courses are, once again, being taught in person. In his State of the School address, Dean Ramos shared an inspiring vision for the future of DUSON.

DUSON's commitment to our community partners and our collective work is also constant. Our bi-lateral partnerships remain stable regardless of the changes taking place around us. In this newsletter we demonstrate this dedication by highlighting the D-CHIPP 3rd Annual Community Partner Recognition Event and acknowledge one of our community partners who recently received a prestigious award. We also describe new partnership opportunities afforded through the RESPECT NC initiative and highlight aspects of community engagement spotlighted in D-CHIPP's 3rd Annual Community Health Lecture.

As we continue to adapt to life in a pandemic during this fall season, we hope you find beauty in change, and optimism in the opportunities it brings.

Center for Nursing Research Update

RESPECT NC
The Center for Nursing Research (CNR), together with D-CHIPP, is moving RESPECT NC into the program plan's second phase. The first phase of RESPECT NC included a series of workshops aimed at educating community partners about community engaged research, research regulations, and grants and fiscal management. In the second aim, RESPECT NC will create a training agenda to prepare Community Health Workers to participate in community engaged research. Recently, community partners, clinical research coordinators, and faculty came together to co-develop the training using design thinking as a guide. The next step in the process is developing the training curriculum. The training workshops will take place in 2022.
Co-sponsored Discussion with Community Health Lecture Keynote
The CNR is co-sponsoring a supplemental discussion with Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott, this year's Community Health Lecture keynote speaker. More information about the November 17th meeting,"Population Specific Community Engagement:  Best Practices for engaging Black Americans in clinical and socio-behavioral research," can be found below.

TROSA recognized with housing award

DUSON community partner, TROSA, has been recognized by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency with one of four 2021 North Carolina Housing Awards. TROSA recently completed two housing units that provide lodging for 60 women in their substance use treatment program. The units include living and game areas, kitchens, 14 showers, and a salon. For every phase in the development, they consulted the city and surrounding neighborhood for input and support. Previously housed away from the TROSA campus, the women living in TROSA’s new housing now feel safer being right across the street. And it is much more convenient for attending classes and counseling, and provides  easier access to medical appointments off campus. Ninety-six percent of TROSA’s graduates are sober one year after graduating, and 100% of them have stable housing. Many of their graduates stay on after graduating to help others through the process of getting sober, and all of them have gainful employment after leaving the program. Click here to watch a YouTube video to learn more about the new TROSA housing units for women. DUSON enthusiastically congratulates TROSA on their 2021 North Carolina Housing Award!

3rd Annual Community Partner Recognition Event

On September 8th, D-CHIPP hosted DUSON's 3rd Annual Community Partner Recognition Event. Representatives from nearly fifteen community non-profit organizations joined DUSON faculty and staff. Dean Ramos joined the event to meet our invaluable community partners, who asked him a variety of questions ranging from the Future of Nursing Report to the importance of nurses in public health. The recognition event is a small expression of our great appreciation and admiration of community partners who help educate our students and participate in community engaged research. We couldn't do it without each of our partners! Thank you!
