SMPA WEEKLY RUNDOWN

Journalism Jobs, Internships Amid COVID Crisis with Sam Feist, CNN D.C. Bureau Chief

Dear SMPA Students,
We've heard from many of you about disruptions to your internships and jobs this summer.  We are trying to help, looking for and posting internships and jobs, bringing you together with Career Services, holding open office hours.
On Friday, April 24th from 2-3 pm ET, SMPA National Council member and CNN Washington Bureau Chief Sam Fiest will join us to discuss media internships and job prospects in the age of COVID-19. Sam is incredibly knowledgeable and will share ideas and suggestions. We're working on a similar event for political communication majors, but any and all are welcome to join us on Friday.
There are no magic answers here, but good and creative ideas are more important than ever. Sam will have some!
We look forward to seeing all who are interested and hope you are healthy and well.

Take Care,
Frank Sesno
Director, SMPA

INTERNSHIPS & JOBS

SMPA is committed to helping you in your search for jobs and internships. We are working each week to make sure you have the most up-to-date information, resources, and support you need to succeed.
GW CENTER FOR CAREER SERVICES
GW Center for Career Services is available to you exclusively via phone and email during regular operating hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm). They have virtual job fairs, virtual resources (how to practice for virtual interviews via Interview Stream or GW career Connect), and LinkedIn Learning classes (ie how to be a successful remote worker- free via handshake). And you can schedule a one-on-one virtual appointment with a career coach!
SUMMER INTERNSHIP

Did you know that you have the option to take a zero-credit internship course over the summer?  This option is made available through the Center for Career Services. It helps students who want to intern for a company that requires them to be registered for internship credit - but it costs just $35 to register. This makes it possible for students who don't need the internship to count toward their SMPA major to take advantage of the opportunity without having to register for 3 academic credits during the summer.

If you require a letter verifying course enrollment for your internship, you can request it through the application form. For further questions about this course or other internship credit options, you can discuss it with your academic adviser. You can also reach out to the CCAS advising office though the main email: ccasug@gwu.edu.

PLANET FORWARD INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Planet Forward is looking for a student reporter and video production intern starting this summer!
The student reporter will find and report on interesting innovations, characters, and events from GW and other Planet Forward contributing universities, as well as the environmental, science, and journalism communities. The student reporter also may assist with research and writing for various Planet Forward productions and events, and the production of the editorial side of our website. All work will be posted on PlanetForward.org.
The video production intern will be involved in producing original video content for PlanetForward.org. This is essentially a field reporter position requiring knowledge and an awareness of on-campus and nearby events.
Applications are due May 15!
MARRAKECH, INC. INTERNSHIP
Marrakech is one of the largest human service organizations in Connecticut and well known in the New Haven area.
Marrakech provides a broad array of programs for children and adults with and without disabilities throughout Connecticut. They are about to celebrate their 50th year in existence with a strong vision of people with disabilities and other barriers, living and working in their communities and accepted by their neighbors, co-workers, families, friends, and acquaintances for their individual qualities and contributions.
This is an exclusive opportunity for SMPA students! The position will be responsible for the development of content for major social networking sites, publicity and marketing materials as appropriate. Additional duties may include staff support for campaign and programming activities as needed.
