Dear ATMIA Member,
The essential role of cash in the economy has once again been brought to the forefront. A major power outage last month, in Brisbane following a turbine fire at the Callide Power Station resulted in hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses losing power. The importance of cash as a safe and reliable payment method was shown in plain sight as businesses that were cashless were unable to continue trading unless they accepted cash.

Another important recent development has been seen in the cashless payment space: the proposed merger of the Eftpos, BPAY and NPP payment platforms. This proposal has received extensive criticism from groups such as the Council of Small Business Organisations in Australia, who are concerned about how this merger could increase the costs for small businesses to use the platforms. These groups claim that the proposed merger “looks like the formation of a monopoly”, where competition is weakened and the options available for merchants to use are reduced. ATMIA is monitoring the situation closely and will be in contact with major stakeholders over the coming weeks.

What’s new to ATMIA this month, ATMIA and the ATM Security Association jointly launched the world's first global-scale Crisis and Crime Intelligence System. The world's first global crime intelligence database for all sectors of the ATM Industry providing an insight into the method of attacks crime migration patterns and emerging forms of global attacks. Members will have the opportunity to report an incident, search by location, and download relevant reports, graphs, and statistical information. To read more click here

There is no doubt, innovation will be a key driver to the ongoing success of the ATM industry: by utilising emerging technologies and ways of thinking we can ensure that our industry remains relevant and efficient into the foreseeable future. We remind all industry stakeholders to start planning for the NextGen, ATM & Payment Sydney event at The Grace Hotel on 9th & 10th December. Anyone interested in a speaking slot or marketing opportunities, please contact Sandra.smith@atmia.com.

Thanks
