March 2023

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Spring Break! We hope your student is enjoying a well-deserved break this week and finding time for reflection and planning. They have earned it!
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we hope you will continue to encourage your students to take advantage of the opportunities listed in this email. These are just a few ways they can finish the semester on a strong note.
To keep you engaged, we have two incredibly exciting opportunities coming your way. The first is our Parent & Family Webinar scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, at 5:00 pm EST with Duke Football Coach: Mike Elko. Coach Elko had an outstanding first season at the helm of Duke football; we know you will love what he has to share about leadership and teamwork. On April 17 at 4:30 pm EST, we will welcome the Deans of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and Pratt School of Engineering to our final Parent & Family Webinar this semester. Dean Gary Bennett and Dean Jerry Lynch will be on hand to talk about the state of the undergraduate experience and what excites them about the future of Duke. More details regarding this webinar will be available in April's Parent and Family Newsletter.
We hope you will join us for these exciting opportunities this spring! As always, thank you for the ways you support your student from home!
GO DUKE!
Ben Adams
Interim Associate Dean of Students & Director of New Student and Family Programs

Leadership Recognition

Lisa Adams

Director for Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)

The American College Counseling Association has announced Dr. Lisa Adams, director of Duke Counseling and Psychological Services, as the 2023 ACCA Director of the Year award winner. The ACCA Director of the Year Award recognizes a college counseling director who has made significant contributions that impact the college counseling field on a national, state, or local level.
Dr. Adams joined the CAPS team in October 2021. Since that time, she has focused on the importance of listening to student needs and is working with the CAPS staff to adapt the service model as needed. In this vein, Dr. Adams continues to demonstrate a deep commitment to increasing equity and access to mental health services for students.  She recently contributed some well-being tips for college students for SELF.com, which included joining clubs, making sure you're getting enough sleep, sticking to an exercise routine, and more.
Duke Resources
Below you will find resources readily available to support your student throughout the semester!
Career Everywhere
Career Influencer Network with Duke Career Center
Career Everywhere for Everyone, is our vision to create and curate career content and set the vision for a campus committed to career readiness and success. Toward this purpose, we launched the Career Influencer Network, faculty and staff across Duke who are having meaningful career conversations with your students.
The goals for the Career Influencer Network are to:
  • Acknowledge faculty and staff who are having significant and effective career conversations and provide tools and training to further expertise
  • Empower faculty and staff to talk about career readiness and resources confidently
  • Eliminate barriers of access to career information and resources and increase equity and access for all students
  • Amplify career readiness and professional development resources
  • Assist students in identifying helpful humans at Duke and beyond who are open and willing to talk about career readiness topics
Career Influencers are nominated by colleagues and/or students because they:
  • Act as a thought partner for students by encouraging reflection and promoting increased self-awareness
  • Help students consider a variety of career options and think through next steps in the decision-making process
  • Engage in short-term and long-term life and professional goal conversations
  • Support students in determining their own conclusions about careers through open-minded, nonjudgmental conversations
  • Encourage students to reach out to the Career Center as needed
Your students can identify Career Influencers by the placard attached or find them on Career Hub, featured in each career community.
Students can nominate Career Influencers here.
