Dear Neighbors,
Remember to join us this Monday, September 24 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the East Phillips Park Cultural and Community Center to catch up on the latest phase of the City's plans to create a wateryard maintenance facility at the site formerly owned by Roof Depot. Over the past four years, the community and the City have been working together to reach a mutually beneficial development plan. The City will present four different development scenarios to the community to gather input and feedback.

Last Friday, after two intense debates about the future of the encampment, the City Council voted to delay moving forward with any plans to place the Hiawatha encampment next to two charter schools for immigrant children. A few hours after this vote was taken, the Red Lake Nation stepped in to offer exploring their Mino-Bimaadiziwin housing project site located at 2105, 2109, and 2113 Cedar Avenue South in Council Member Abdi Warsame's ward as a potential new home for the people living at the encampment.
I am thrilled about the possibility of this new site and thank the Red Lake Nation, Mayor Jacob Frey, our City staff, and our Council for keeping this issue front and center.
Join the full City Council this coming Wednesday, September 26th at 2:30 p.m. in Council Chambers or follow the discussion online on the City's website (livestream) to hear the next steps the City Council plans to take to help relatives at the camp.
