A WEEKLY DIGEST OF NEED-TO-KNOW FOR THE LEADERS OF ESD 105 |
A school culture of safety is essential to creating an educational environment that is socially, emotionally, academically and physically safe for our students. As you all know, there are many things that can threaten to weaken the sense of security in your buildings: bullying, harassment, gang activity, substance abuse, social media threats, school violence, upset parents and community members... the list goes on! In many cases, students are both causes and victims of much of the crime and misbehavior on our campuses.
As our SSOCC program likes to remind us, we are the first line of defense in preventing school violence. Let's all work together to keep each other safe this school year. Here are some resources for recognizing National School Safety Week in your school communities:

Building Resilient Inclusive Communities (BRIC) |
Yakima Health District's Encourages the Community to Stay Healthy
Last week the Yakima Health District released information about grant funds they have available to support community organizations interested in promoting healthy activities within their communities. Some ideas for funding included "Yield to Pedestrian" crosswalk signs, supportive light flashers, portable speed bumps, and traffic cones and other safety devices that can be used to help keep our students safe when walking to and from school.
It also encompassed art and beautification projects that encourage social connectedness, using an equity approach. Some project ideas were painting of intersections and streetscape items like planters, painting on buildings and more!
