Over the span of eight weeks, six teams competed to find a creative way to address access to healthy food by raising awareness about Hartford’s Farmers’ Markets.

Six teams, who were each paired with an executive mentor, went through an immersive experience learning about the issue of food insecurity, the ALICE* population and United Way, while also forming relationships with the community and each other. Throughout the experience, teams participated in professional development sessions and crafted their ideas, with all teams presenting twice before our panel of judges. Three teams moved onto the finals, Food Fighters from Aetna, a CVS Health Company; Comcast Antelopes from Comcast; and, HolisticHart from Cigna.

On Tuesday night, we announced the winning team: The Food Fighters! United Way and our partners will be working with the winners over the next several months to implement their idea.

Our “Bring the Farm Home” nutrition education campaign highlights Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, enhances nutrition literacy and builds community connections, overall sustainably increasing local farmers’ markets’ utilization and awareness. A community event at the Park Street Library Branch will promote each of the seven Hartford farmers’ markets, and attendees will receive an exclusive loyalty rewards card for the summer as well as educational programming. The event will be supplemented by advertisements on Facebook and an experience guide brochure, while encouraging attendance and retention through our texting platform and rewards card.
