Combating racialized medicine
A group of five undergraduates from a variety of programs recently took first place in the inaugural Black Inventors Hall of Fame Design Thinking Collegiate Challenge. Calling themselves the TU Trailblazers, the team developed a proposal to address racialized medicine through the creation of a course for students intending to pursue medical studies. "Our guiding mission was to tackle the social determinants of health and the structural racism that influence health outcomes," said Star Okolie, the group's leader.

Learning in the global classroom
Eight talented, hard-working TU undergraduates recently received the good news that they have been awarded prestigious, nationally competitive scholarships – seven Gilmans and one Freeman-ASIA – that will enable them to live and learn overseas. After the travel moratorium imposed by the pandemic, these study-abroad opportunities are especially welcome. Pre-med student Carlos Vallejo has his sights set on studying the distribution of health care in a Spanish-speaking country: "I am excited to be placed in a country that is completely out of my comfort zone and to be challenged to grow academically and as an individual."

The archaeology of climate change
Professor of Anthropology Thomas Foster is part of an international team that's refining global climate change models by mapping human land use for the entire globe for the last 10,000 years. The work of Foster and a cadre of other experts was recently published in PLOS ONE, a prestigious peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal. This research will improve our understanding of past interactions between land cover and climate, and it could help humanity see the future effects of land-use change on the planet's climate. With that in mind, Foster and his colleagues hope their investigations will influence government policies.

"TU Dortmund offers our students a free four-week German intensive course prior to the start of the semester; a 'buddy program' with TU Dortmund students; academic and housing support; and an introduction to the city of Dortmund," said center Director Laura Semenow. "Students from Tulsa will receive a premier education in Germany, improve their German language and meet people from all over the world."
