Just 8 days after Martin Luther King Jr. led a civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law on August 6, 1965, by President Lyndon B. Johson. The Act prohibited discriminatory voting practices, including literacy test prerequisites, and ensured no federal, state, or local government could impede people from voting because of their race or ethnicity. The Act marked a significant statutory change in the relationship between the state and federal governments regarding voting since the Reconstruction post-Civil War. The impact of the Voting Rights Act was immediate and undeniable. In 1965, a quarter of a million new Black voters were registered to vote and only a handful of Southern states had fewer than 50% of African Americans registered to vote. Our alumni and friends of LMU are invited to get inspired by Ramona Wright ’00, a President’s Volunteer Service Award honoree, which is the highest civil award bestowed by the President of the United States in recognition of volunteerism. Service to and with others is one of LMU’s core values; we will hear from Ramona as she shares her story about her commitment to service at Love My Neighbor Foundation, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit serving the homeless community with food, clothing, and spiritual enlightenment. Attendees are encouraged to bring new, unused toiletries or individually packaged snacks to the event to be donated to Love My Neighbor Foundation.
