Check out what's new, Coach!
NEW COURSE: Intro to Framework
Our new self-paced NSDA Learn course introduces students or coaches to framework in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. This free course was developed by LD experts Nick Smith, head debate coach at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota, and Lawrence Zhou, 2014 national champion. Upon completion of the course, members will be able to:
- Explain the proper function of the value and criterion
- Identify and explain common frameworks and the philosophy behind them
- Craft a justified framework on a variety of topics and leverage it in round
- Respond to a variety of frameworks
Learn more about framework yourself, share the course with assistant coaches, or instruct students to take it independently using the included comprehension checks as homework. It is worth three credit hours and participants will be presented with a certificate verifying their participation upon completion of the course to meet professional development requirements.
The latest issue of Rostrum focuses on finding the mindset and motivation you need to keep loving speech and debate. The content includes a frank discussion of burnout and strategies for combatting it, a matrix for organizing your time based on the urgency and importance of work, and advice and stories from coaches who have worked to find balance. If you're feeling alone in your struggles with teaching or coaching, we hope you'll find tools and connection in this issue.
Register for Upcoming Coaches' Caucuses
Mark your calendar—several coaches' caucuses are meeting in March! Caucuses are a great opportunity to network with other coaches and join in important discussion and dialogue about the successes, needs, and challenges of communities. Please remember that participants should abide by the NSDA harassment and discrimination policy at all times.
Next Week: Be Part of Speech and Debate's Biggest Day!
March 4 is National Speech and Debate Education Day! Held annually on the first Friday in March, NSDE Day recognizes teachers and students who are transforming tomorrow through speech and debate education. Teams across the country will join in the celebration, and we hope you'll be among them! Find posters and ideas for celebrating and encourage your students to share their stories on social media and tag us @speechanddebate and #WeAreSpeechAndDebate.
Coaches» Coaches who perform service for the NSDA, such as hosting tournaments or recruiting or sponsoring new schools, earn service citations. As you enter citations digitally, you work toward Distinguished Service Awards, which honor coaches using their skills to serve others. Learn more or add citations today!
Students » Students can earn up to 20 service points per day for a maximum of 200 service points per year. Service points can be entered at an advisor’s discretion for activities that better a student’s school or community. They are a great way to retain students involved in a slew of activities and celebrate the difference they're making with their skills. Examples include:
- Coaching middle or elementary school students prior to a tournament
- Judging a round of middle school competition
- Giving a speech at a political rally
Volunteering to help at the ballot table at an after-school tournament
- Working at a team fundraiser
- Speaking as part of a religious service
Students who earn the maximum number of service points in a given year are awarded the Speaking and Service Award.
