Message from the Interim Director of Extension

Needs assessment is a cornerstone of Extension work. With accurate information on the needs and issues challenging our stakeholders, Extension can have significant impacts on changing the lives of Arizonans across the state. You have, undoubtedly by now, heard me talk about our three-prong approach to defining 21st-century UArizona Cooperative Extension: Economic Impacts, Needs Assessment, and Strategic Planning. The economic impact has been completed, and soon you will be hearing and seeing the results of that study. Phase two - needs assessment - is quickly approaching the implementation stage. Dr. Michele Walsh and her team have put together a survey that will help us prioritize existing Extension programs and identify new areas. You will soon get a request to have these surveys filled out. Her team has set target numbers for each county and has even identified how many surveys are needed for specific zip codes within the county. This is being done to ensure we have a representative sample from across the state. I want to thank Michele and her team for their outstanding work, and I want to thank all of you in advance for your support and help in getting these surveys filled out. The results from the needs assessment will help shape future programming investments.

The southwest U.S. has a unique climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons that emerge throughout the annual cycle (Sheppard et al. 2002). In Arizona and New Mexico, the annual pattern of precipitation is characterized by rapid onset of the summer monsoon thunderstorm activity in late June that persists through late September and a more gradual onset of winter storms in late October that can persist through the spring. These two rainfall periods set the conditions for seasonal fire activity, streamflow and water supply, and rangeland conditions (Crimmins et al. 2017).
