Finding Hope and Healing in a New Season
Dear HAPI Community,
As the leaves begin to shift and the crisp energy of fall settles in, September ushers in not only a new season, but a renewed commitment to healing, connection, and artistic expression. At Healing Arts Project, we see this month as a time to pause, reflect, and gather in community through creativity.
Our teaching artists are partnering with peer-support centers across Tennessee, and are preparing to offer free classes that do much more than teach technique. Our classes foster belonging, self-worth, and resilience. Each studio moment becomes a space where individuals navigating mental health and recovery can feel seen, heard, and empowered.
This month also brings a powerful reminder: September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Earlier this month, we joined the global community in recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day, lifting up the importance of awareness, compassion, and connection. Through art, we affirm that every voice matters, every story counts, and every person is worthy of care and understanding.
Looking ahead, we invite you to join us for our upcoming Service of Hope on October 5. This gathering will be a time of reflection, healing, and celebration of resilience, a space where music, words, and art come together to extend light to those who need it most.
I invite you to engage, attend a class, visit an exhibition, participate in a community event, or simply share our message. Whether through volunteerism, attendance, or advocacy, each action helps illuminate the healing potential of art.
With gratitude and determination,
Lynece Benton-Stewart
Executive Director

Service of Hope: Honoring Resilience, Overcoming Adversity
The Service of Hope is one of HAPI’s most meaningful gatherings of the year, a powerful moment when community comes together through healing, reflection, and the arts. It is more than a program. It is an invitation to pause, honor resilience, restore spirit, and reimagine what’s possible when creativity and compassion lead the way.
What to Expect
This year’s Service of Hope will feature a moving blend of music, poetry, and visual art, offered by HAPI teaching artists, peers, and community partners. Each element is designed to open space for reflection, remembrance, and renewal. Together, we will honor those whose journeys have been touched by loss or struggle and lift up the strength it takes to continue forward.
Participants can expect an atmosphere that is both reflective and celebratory, where silence, song, and shared expression weave together to create a collective experience of hope.
Why It Matters
September is recognized nationally as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to break silence, reduce stigma, and extend compassion to those navigating pain.
The Service of Hope carries this spirit forward. At HAPI, we believe in the healing power of creativity; that every brushstroke, every note of music, every shared word can affirm:
You are not alone. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Healing is possible.
By gathering together, we create a living reminder that art can hold grief, honor resilience, and spark renewal.
A Gathering for All
ALL are welcome. The Service of Hope is open to everyone, regardless of background, tradition, or religion. It is a space where diversity of experience is honored, and where each individual is invited to participate in a way that feels meaningful to them. Whether you come seeking comfort, connection, or inspiration, this service is a place to belong.

From Vision to Venture:
HAPI’s Joshua Jackson Among Top Finalists in Periscope Training
Recently, Joshua Jackson, HAPI’s Middle Tennessee Program Director, graduated from the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville’s Periscope: Artist Entrepreneur Training program, finishing as one of only eight finalists in the Class of 2025.
Periscope is a competitive nine-week program that helps working artists see their creative practice through an entrepreneurial lens. Participants engage in intensive workshops on business strategy, marketing, and planning, and the program culminates in a showcase and pitch event. Each artist has the opportunity to present their work, with a select group chosen to pitch their ideas before a panel of judges and community leaders.
With his company, Moved, Joshua advanced as one of the eight finalists, highlighting his ability to merge artistry with vision, sustainability, and impact. His journey reflects both the resilience and creativity that drive his leadership at HAPI, where he coordinates classes, exhibitions, and events across Middle Tennessee to uplift artists in mental health and addiction recovery.
| |
|
Joshua’s achievement affirms not only his personal dedication, but also the ways in which HAPI’s mission aligns with broader movements to support and sustain artists. We are proud to celebrate his accomplishment and look forward to the new opportunities his Periscope experience will open for him and for the HAPI community.
Congratulations, Joshua!

Creating Through Hard Times: Finding Hope and Healing Through Art
Written by Sheena Adams-Avery, CDT, CDP, QPRT,
Community Engagment, Culture Awareness & Belonging Manager
Hard times can weigh heavily on us, making even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. Some days, merely getting through feels like a victory. In these moments, art can become more than just a hobby; it can be a lifeline. It offers a way to process emotions, release pent-up feelings, and discover flickers of hope amid despair.
Creating art is not about perfection or technical ability. It’s about expressing what you feel deep inside. A brushstroke, a line in a journal, or a note sung aloud gives shape to feelings that can be too overwhelming to carry alone. By engaging with art, we confront our emotions, honor our experiences, and ultimately find glimpses of light where darkness once prevailed.

Honoring Mental Health & Resilience Through the Arts
| |
At HAPI, we celebrate the powerful connection between wellness and the arts, a space where healing, expression, and resilience flourish all year long.
This September, we recognized Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, observances that call us to awareness, compassion, and community support. Through painting, poetry, music, and movement, the arts offer comfort, raise awareness, and remind us that even in difficult times, hope and connection are possible.
| |
| | As September comes to a close, we carry forward the reminder that every act of creative expression is a step toward healing and a testament to the transformative power of the arts.
Looking ahead, October brings several awareness observances, times to stand with survivors, raise awareness, and honor resilience. Together, we will continue to use the arts to foster understanding, healing, and hope.
