Dear Industry professional,
In a world of challenging times, it’s important to stay abreast of the current environment and continue to maintain control of the situation. The hysteria around cash being a carrier of COVID-19 has subsided. The challenge now is to get the truth out and spread the message that cash is a safe method of payment. This message from WHO is clear, "We did NOT say that cash was transmitting coronavirus,” said WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib, “We said you should wash your hands after handling money, especially if handling or eating food. Doing so is good hygiene practice.” To read the full public statement click here
In 2020, there has definitely been a shift with consumer payment behavior towards online shopping, people are now relying heavily on contactless payment, however, there is no doubt this will come at a substantial cost for society. It is expected over the next five years, spending in cybersecurity for this region will triple, as the private sectors work towards protecting credit cards details and to ensure personal details are not compromised in any form. Despite this substantial investment, cash remains the safest and most secure payment option.
ATMIA will continue to highlight the advantages of cash usage in the “Cash is So Good" campaign to ensure cash retains its essential role in the economy. Through this campaign, we aim to prevent banning individuals from the right to pay in a cash transaction. Everyone has the right to payment choice and preventing this payment method only discriminates against the most vulnerable in society. Cash always works, cash is secure and private, cash is inclusive, cash is a budgeting tool.
There is no doubt ATMIA has a clear direction with our ATM and Cash Revival Plan and working together we can all look forward to the future that lies ahead for this industry.
Thanks,
Sandra Smith Executive Director, Asia Pacific sandra.smith@atmia.com C: +61 424 300 660
