UMSL Celebrated its Outstanding Researchers, Inventors, and Innovators at Reception on April 8The ORECD held its annual event in person this year to honor researchers with federal funding and both inventors and innovators in applied research and creativity with a reception in the lobby of the Science and Learning Building where the UMSL Innovation Wall was installed last year to feature issued pantents from UMSL inventors.
During the short program featuring comments by the chancellor, provost, and vice chancellor for research, the 2022 investigators and innovators of the year were announced, and the new member of the UMSL chapter of the National Academy of Inventors was inducted.
2022 Investigators and Innovators of the Year Awards:
- SENIOR INVESTIGATOR OF THE YEAR: Jerry Dunn, clinical professor and executive director, Children’s Advocacy Services of Greater St. Louis
- JUNIOR INVESTIGATOR OF THE YEAR: Lon Chubiz, associate professor, Department of Biology
- CO-INVESTIGATORS OF THE YEAR: Aimee Dunlap and Nathan Muchhala, both associate professors in the Department of BIology
- INNOVATORS OF THE YEAR: Felia Davenport, associate professor, Department of Communication and Media; and Uma Segal, Curators’ Distinguished professor, School of Social Work.
Winners from 2021 were also recognized as the in-person event could not be held last year. (See previous winners on the ORECD web page, "Faculty and Student Awards" tab.)
Jianli Pan, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, was inducted into the UMSL Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors. The NAI is a US not-for-profit organization dedicated to encouraging inventors in academia, following the model of the National Academies of the United States. It is a member organization comprising universities and governmental and not-for-profit research institutes with more than 4,000 individual inventor members and Fellows spanning more than 250 institutions worldwide. UMSL's chapter now has 19 inventor members and two Fellows.

Spring 2022NSF Grants Conference, June 6-10
The NSF Grants Conference is designed to give new faculty, researchers, and administrators key insights into a wide range of current issues at NSF. NSF program officers will be providing up-to-date information about specific funding opportunities and answering attendee questions.
Registration opens on Wed., May 11 at 11 a.m. (CDT). For those who cannot attend the live conference, all recorded conference sessions will be available on-demand shortly after the event.
Just like the in-person grants conferences, the virtual conference is a must, especially for new faculty, researchers, and administrators.

The Office of IP Management & Commercialization, also known as "Technology Transfer" or the "TTO," assists faculty in protecting and bringing their research discoveries and inventions, whether patentable or copyrightable, to market.

Your tech transfer staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.
We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
