A Holiday Message from the Dean |
Dear SOP community and friends,
This has been another successful year for the School of Pharmacy. Thank you for being an amazing community of faculty, scientists, staff, students, preceptors and alumni. As we reflect on the last year, we are reminded of the incredible accomplishments and milestones we've achieved together, and we eagerly anticipate the exciting opportunities that the coming year holds.
Please enjoy some of the highlights of our achievements, impact and community in the 2023 Rewind and in our highlight summary. I am proud of our commitment to making Mississippi and beyond a healthier place. I wish each of you a wonderful holiday break; time to rest, reflect and celebrate your contributions to our success and strength as a School of Pharmacy. May you have a joyful, healthy holiday season and a happy new year!
Hotty Toddy!
Donna Strum, Dean

Four University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy students have been accepted into the ACT Pharmacy Collaborative's Pharmacy Student Scholar Leaders program.
Students selected were Delancey Anderson, of Yazoo City, Erin Lomenick Pearsonm of Potts Camp, Elizabeth Jenkins, of Grenada, and John White, of Puckett. Only 66 students from across the country were selected to complete the program during its inaugural 2023-2024 academic year.
"I was thrilled to hear that four of our students were accepted into this first cohort," said Lindsey Miller, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. "I love that students will be able to develop leadership skills while meeting other students with similar passions and career goals."

As the holiday season continues with its usual festivities, travel and time indoors, respiratory viruses will inevitably appear and spread through households. So, this is a good time to address the common misconception that antibiotics are the cure for such ailments.
The truth is that antibiotics do not treat viruses, and using them for common colds, which are caused by viruses, could cause harm to our individual well-being and the health of the larger community. During Antibiotic Awareness Week in November, health care providers drew attention to the nuances of antibiotic use.

New findings from the School of Pharmacy's National Center for Natural Products Research show that two plant oils can effectively repel fire ants.
The papers, recently published in Insects and the Journal of Medical Entomology, investigate compounds found in thyme and turmeric essential oils for their repellency and toxicity against fire ants. The natural compounds were found to be as effective as some synthetic insecticides.
"Imported fire ants are a very dangerous pest, especially for humans because of their bites and the venom that they inject into the body," said Abbas Ali, NCNPR principal scientist. "Many people are allergic to their bites."

The University of Mississippi has created a new online graduate program focusing on medical cannabis and dietary supplements, leaning on the university's long-standing reputation for expertise in both fields.
The new degree program builds on the expertise and research excellence found in the National Center for Natural Products Research and National Center for Cannabis Research and Education, both housed in the School of Pharmacy.
"Our goal is to create one of the best programs, if not the best, to serve the industry, and it really builds off our strengths," said David Colby, the program's organizer and a professor in the Department of BioMolecular Sciences.

The School of Pharmacy will host its second annual Summer Research Experience in 2024. We ask you to invest in the future biomedical workforce by giving to this impactful program to help cover the costs for participating student researchers.
The nine-week program provides students with research opportunities in various areas within the field of pharmaceutical sciences. Participants learn about cutting-edge pharmacy-related topics, develop presentation and communication skills, practice networking skills and explore and develop their interest in research.
