Highlight From NASEM Event: Provost Gallimore Speaks on Creating Equitable Research Ecosystems |
Advancing equity isn’t easy, even for highly experienced academic leaders. “Matters associated with the pursuit of equity, diversity, pluralism, inclusion and belonging are easily as complex as any scholarly endeavor I can think of,” conceded Provost Alec Gallimore at a Duke-hosted workshop organized by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM).
“My advice is to approach this with the same rigor that you apply to your other work,” Gallimore told the group. “Do your homework, focus on areas where you can have impact and be able to sustain your efforts, and then empower people who have the expertise and commitment to this work to act.”
“In my experience, we’re stronger when we apply an equity lens to our work,” Gallimore said. “There is pushback sometimes, but as academics, we are used to working through criticisms of our ideas. This work is too important to allow naysayers to stop us. We have to continue our efforts and stay committed to advancing equity.”
