Immigration tip
OPT & Days of Unemployment

Once your OPT card arrives, you should review the start and end date listed on it. These are your official dates of OPT work authorization. You are permitted to accrue up to 90 days of unemployment during your authorized OPT period. ISSS recommends that you try your best not to get close to accruing 90 days of unemployment. After you have accrued 90 days of unemployment on OPT, you are no longer maintaining your F-1 legal status and should depart the U.S. as soon as possible.

Sometimes, students have difficulty finding employment or their planned start date with a company is delayed. Here are some tips to help you prevent accrual of unemployment days:
  • Volunteer and unpaid work, for 12-month OPT, is acceptable as long as you are still working at least 20 hours per week and doing work directly related to your major field of study.
  • Reach out to a nonprofit organization that relates to your major field of study to see if they have volunteer or internship work you can do.
  • Talk with professors and staff in your academic department to see if they are aware of any opportunities.
  • See below for how to connect with the Center for Career Exploration & Success to discuss job opportunities.
