Message from the Associate Dean and Extension Director

The Cooperative Extension System (CES) has an explicit mission and purpose to apply research-based information to a broad range of topics including the social, physical, and biological sciences to improve the lives of individuals, families, communities, the environment, and the economy.

The process of bringing science to bear on practical problems was one of the fundamental objectives in the original formation of land grant universities.  The CES does this very well in addressing our core mission of using research-based science to solve practical problems.

The CES puts science to work in Arizona, the desert Southwest, and the world beyond this region in a constant effort to deliver on our basic mission.

New Cooperative Extension Website

We have launched our new Cooperative Extension website!

We have a brand new look, but all the same functions -
including some NEW features like improved search function, pages that make it easier to 'explore', and of course, mobile friendly.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue making improvements and capturing your feedback.  You can submit any corrections or functional-improvement suggestions by using our new Support Tracker

Thank you for your continued support as we fine tune the site!

4-H Logo

You asked….We answered….:

4-H is the youth development education program of University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.

You can’t have one without the other.

So – UA Cooperative Extension, the University of Arizona, and National 4-H Council have come together to brand our working relationship.

For the first time – we can visually represent our strong & vibrant history of partnership in youth development – via a *new* logo:

If you are a 4-H Agent or program coordinator– reach out to Malisa Grantham - malisag@email.arizona.edu – for access to the *new*  University of Arizona/4-H logo, and a guidelines to best practices for using them to market *your* county’s program.

 Firewise USA Program

If any of the county offices are interested in receiving informational materials on the Firewise USA program, let me know. The National Fire Protection Association recently updated some of their literature to make it more reader friendly. Spanish versions are also available for some of the literature. Firewise USA materials from the National Fire Protection Association are delivered at zero cost and typically within 2-3 business days. The National Interagency Fire Center is predicting above normal wildland fire potential for most of Arizona starting in May.

I also have some 2016 versions of the UA’s Living with Wildfire – Homeowners Firewise Guide for Arizona. This is an 18 page document that delves into Firewise and gives guidance on planning for evacuations in the event of an approaching wildland fire.  Contact Patrick Rappold, Area Assistant Agent – Forest Health,  Gila County Cooperative Extension.

George Brookbank

Founder of the Pima County Master Gardener Program
George Brookbank passed away at his home in Tucson on March 1, 2018 at the age of 93.

He became the Pima County Horticultural Agent in 1971, and founded the Master Gardener program of the UA Cooperative Extension in 1983, becoming its energetic voice through weekly in-person talks, regular appearances on local television and radio, two excellent books, and numerous articles in local publications. He was a talented, dedicated teacher, who believed that good education should inspire students. He left an impressive legacy of gardening leadership and education, and many friends in the area. He established the Master Gardener program as the authoritative source for gardening information in Pima County. After retiring in 1995, he continued to be active for several years with the Community Garden program in Tucson that he also helped found.

Bed Bugs Pose Major Problems

Drs. Dawn Gouge (Professor and Extension Specialist, Department of Entomology), Shujuan (Lucy) Li and Shaku Nair (Assistants in Extension, Maricopa Agricultural Center), Cooperative Extension personnel with the Arizona Pest Management Center (APMC), presented at the first-ever statewide Bed Bug Workshop in Nevada, hosted by Clark County Cooperative Extension office in Las Vegas, NV on February 21, 2018.

The day-long workshop trained participants on the biology of bed bugs, management methods, pesticide resistance in bed bugs, quick and thorough inspection protocols, and took a deep dive into bed bug management in schools, multi-unit housing and hotels.

The UA scientists, members of the APMC Community IPM Team, were joined by other experts from the Western Region IPM Center (WIPMC) Bed Bug Work Group to present this day-long workshop.  The event was attended by more than 200 people, including participants in Las Vegas and people who joined remotely from seven University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offices throughout the state.

The latest Western IPM Center newsletter includes a feature article on the WIPMC Bed Bug Work Group, including the bed bug website that the Work Group has created as well as the Bed Bug Workshop in Las Vegas.  For more information, please see
