Dearest Digesteers,
Greetings from...nowhere! Jeeze, where to begin?
Well, as you may have heard, Big Sur is - what's the word? - closed? Isolated? Cut in half? In hibernation? Due to the closure of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge (above) and other weather-related road closures.
Reports from those "left behind" have told us it's rather stunning in a post-apocalyptic sort of way. Zero cars on the highway. Wildflowers running wild. Animals everywhere. Helicopters dropping off food and medicine and buzzing around with lasers (!).
HML's Sarah sums up the surreal majesty best: "It's so quiet on the highway you can stop your car all the time just in the middle of the road - drive on the wrong side - whatever!!!"
And so the Library is closed. Till how long? We don't know. They need to put in a new bridge. We are waiting and seeing. (Updated here.) Until then, the Digest rolls on, unencumbered, so off we go!
Mailer and Miller, Edinburgh, 1962: The story behind the photo!
We've always been intrigued by this iconic photo of a pugnacious and virile (wasn't he always?) Norman Mailer and his hero Henry. But where were they? What brought them together?
We did some digging and the truth will SHOCK you! (Just kidding, it won't. But the 1962 Edinburgh International Writers' Conference Revisited certainly represented an unprecedented gathering of literary heavyweights!*)
...........
Fun fact: We had the organizers
of the 1962 Conference - John Calder, Sheila Colvin and Jim Haynes - for dinner when we went to Paris in 2014.
(...and while you're at it, read Mailer's 1976 letter to Henry here!)
"Nothing Happened...and we loved it!"
Take a peek inside the Henry Miller Library guestbook!

If you’ve ever been to Library, you’ll know we have a guestbook at the front door. Who knows? Perhaps you’ve signed it yourself. Every now and then we scan some of the most intriguing entries and post them here for your enjoyment. So…enjoy!
Ryan Adams plays the Library (2011); Name-drops Henry Miller (2017)
Ryan Adam's 2011 show at the Library was important for two reasons. One, Keely got to meet him.
And two, even though photographs and video were barred from the show, we somehow have a picture of Ryan with Theo the cat!
What's more, Ryan gave Henry a shout-out in the most recent issue of New Music Express, noting, "I tend to side with the writing of Henry Miller and Bukowski..." while talking about his artistic inspirations.
Check out the whole thing here!
Speaking of Bukowski...check out Hank's thoughts on Henry!
Department of Cosmic: Sam Phillips, the Kitchen Sisters, and Mike!
Every now and then stars align eerily and serendipitously once conversations commence inside the Library.
By popular demand! Hippie Sven and the Wall: The Full Version!
As always thanks for your support! See you again in late March.
