Navigating difficult classroom discussion and disagreements |
Friday, April 26, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM |
Join us for an insightful event where we will discuss strategies for handling challenging conversations in the classroom. We'll focus on productively managing difficult moments and disagreements in classes and methods for monitoring and managing your classroom's "emotional temperature" when addressing potentially difficult topics.
Please read the PSU resource Supporting Students through Difficult Conversations before this event. We look forward to talking about your past experiences and current ideas about managing difficult conversations in your teaching!

Essential student communications for week 4 |
As we enter week four of the semester, this is an ideal opportunity to enhance engagement and build strong connections with your students. This critical period is when students deepen their grasp of the coursework and may require additional support to overcome emerging challenges. Here are a few tips for maintaining open lines of communication in the coming weeks:
Learn about your students!
You can create a Google Forms Survey to learn about your students and their experience in your course. Along with their academic experience, it’s important to know whether your students have any significant constraints on their coursework. Here's a Sample Pre-Term Survey you can copy and modify for mid-term use!
Schedule office hours - in person or on Zoom!
It often helps students to have a brief conversation with you at this point in the term. This will alleviate anxiety for students who have questions about course requirements or structure. It can also foster engagement and make your class time more productive. If you want to do these online, here's how to schedule an office hour in Zoom.
Add a Zoom check-in to the Google Class Time Calendar
Our Google Calendar automatically generates events for courses you teach. These are shared with everyone on your Banner roster. You can add your Zoom meeting link as a course event so all your students will find it there.

Do documents appear as links when you want them to be viewable on your pages in Canvas? In this tutorial, you'll learn how to upload documents directly to your pages and explore the Link Options that determine how those documents are displayed.

Get ready to increase accessibility within your course! This tutorial will walk you through how to upload captions for your videos in Canvas. Just be sure the caption files are .SRT or .VVT!

Get Midterm Feedback from your students! |
Sign up for the Midterm Student Feedback service to receive anonymous feedback from your students before their end-of-course evaluations. This process only requires 15-20 minutes of class time and can be customized to meet your specific needs and interests. An Office of Academic Innovation staff member will help your students fill out anonymous feedback forms and then transcribe and share the responses with you. If you are interested in further collaboration, they will be available to work with you on specific strategies for addressing student feedback.
