A renowned international performer with Wisconsin roots will bring the American Civil War era to life with songs, projected images, and excerpts from letters between a Wisconsin soldier and his wife, in a Wisconsin performance tour.
Judy Cook is the author of the book A QUIET CORNER OF THE WAR: The Civil War Letters of Gilbert and Esther Claflin, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, 1862–1863 (University of Wisconsin Press). She has been a popular touring performer of American and British traditional ballads since the early 1990s. Books will be available for purchase at the events.
A bundle of forgotten letters from a Wisconsin farm drew Cook into the Civil War experiences of her great-great grandparents, Gilbert and Esther Claflin. In 1863 Esther was running the family farm near Oconomowoc, while Gilbert was serving with the Thirty-Fourth Wisconsin Infantry garrisoned in western Kentucky along the Mississippi. Cook draws on the Claflin’s letters for her Civil War performances.

“As I read these letters, I had a window into real lives during the Civil War. Their letters are full of day-to-day details for both a soldier in camp and his wife and children back home on the farm. They became utterly real to me 150 years later,” Cook recalls.
