Northeast District Vice President

L’Shanah Tovah everyone! As we enter the year 5777 and begin Yamim Noraim (Ten Days of Awe), we are all reminded to reflect on the past year and find ways to make the year ahead a better one. We reflect on our accomplishments and disappointments, on mitzvot, spiritual growth, goals we wish to achieve in the year ahead, and find ways to seek out connections with old and new friends. One easy way to get a head start on your bucket list for 5777 is to register for the Fifth WRJ Northeast Biennial Convention. The convention will be held on the weekend of November 3-6, 2016, in Albany, New York. It will include inspirational workshops, opportunities to participate in social action projects, time to connect with old friends, make new friends, and rejoice in music, prayer and Torah during Shabbat services. This year’s theme is “Kol Isha – Voices in Harmony.” The weekend will feature two special guest voices: our Scholar in Residence, Cantor Claire Franco from The Community Synagogue in Port Washington, New York, and from Women of Reform Judaism, Vice President of Affiliate Services, Sherri Feuer, from Temple Israel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Together, they will welcome and lead us in song, inspire us to explore Judaism, and help individuals find their spiritual balance. The committee has been hard at work to ensure that this convention will be enjoyable for all attendees, whether this will be your very first convention or one of many. The weekend will also include the final meeting of the outgoing WRJ Northeast Board and the installation of the incoming board for the term 2016-2018. Please join us in celebrating this transition, as we congratulate the outgoing board members, under the leadership of WRJ Northeast District President Denise Levine, on a job well done, and wish the incoming board all the best. You do not want to miss this biennial convention! If you have not signed up yet, please hurry; the last day to register is October 10, 2016, and the last day to book a hotel room at the WRJ Convention rate is October 13, 2016. There is still time! May you be inscribed for a good and sweet New Year!

Two Programming Opportunities for Your Sisterhood

Arrange a Viewing of DENIAL, the Movie
Based on the acclaimed book "Denial: Holocaust History on Trial," DENIAL recounts Deborah Lipstadt’s (Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz) legal battle against David Irving (BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier.
In the English legal system, in cases of libel, the burden of proof is on the defendant; therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team, led by Richard Rampton (Academy Award® nominee Tom Wilkinson), to prove that the Holocaust had occurred.

Help Repeal the Hyde Amendment
This week marked the 40th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding for abortions with very few exceptions. The Reform Movement and its interfaith allies are rallying forces for the repeal of Hyde and the passage of the Equal Access to Abortion in Health Insurance or EACH Woman Act (H.R. 2972). #Faith4Coverage
The EACH Woman Act seeks to repeal the Hyde Amendment and guarantee that every woman who receives care or insurance through a federal plan will have insurance coverage for abortion.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
| |
Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among American women. One in eight women born today in the United States will get breast cancer. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them. If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every two years. You may also choose to get them more often. Early detection is the best protection!
