NYU Shanghai undergraduates shared their work at the Fall 2023 Undergraduate Research Symposium on November 3. A record number of 35 student research groups introduced their work to an audience of over 100 people on a diverse range of topics, everything from waste collection in India, Chinese painting, omission bias, and spotted lanternflies.

• The Center for Global Asia and the Digital Heritage Lab hosted an open house displaying digital heritage projects utilizing VR and AR technologies. In the CGA VR Gallery, China-India artistic interactions in the 20th century are displayed in a virtual Siheyuan. Visitors can also use electronic devices to explore ancient Chinese architectural marvels in AR. The VR project was designed by former CGA postdocs Yan Yu (currently at Shanghai Jiaotong University), Zhao Jinchao (currently at Tongji University), and others. The AR project was a collaborative effort led by Global China Studies Area Head Zuo Lala alongside Clinical Instructor of Interactive Media Arts Zhang Xingchen with the assistance of Chen Sinuo '24, Wang Yuhan '24, Zha Yuhong '24, and Hu Yuyang '25.

• NYU Shanghai international students Joy Cheng '25, Red Wertheimer '26, Alexandra Greer '26, Celine Xu '24, and their supporting teammates traveled to Duke Kunshan University for a Chinese language debate competition on the topic of " If an AI button can reveal what people are thinking about you, would you would press that button," organized by Senior Lecturer of Chinese Shui Xiaobo for her Spoken Contemporary Chinese course. Both NYU Shanghai and Duke Kunshan teams presented compelling and innovative arguments representing both the pros and cons of this issue.

• Community Engaged Learning organized an immersive learning trip to Yungu Farm in Jinshan district to learn about permaculture farming, and experience rice harvesting first-hand. With a decade of experience, Yungu farm has a remarkable reputation for its organic rice and community building.

• Interactive Media Arts students traveled to Shenzhen as part of their elective course Data: Code it, Make it! They visited ELEGOO, Manifold Tech, the HAX accelerator, and Huaqiangbei, the famous electronics market.
