Increasing Access to Speech and Debate through Virtual Tournaments

Tournaments are expensive and can price out schools, programs, and individual students with a lack of financial resources. Even for well-supported programs, schools in rural or remote areas find that the distance to travel to tournaments is prohibitive. In the latest issue of Rostrum magazine, we explore increasing access to speech and debate via virtual tournaments.
Check out an explanation of how virtual competition provides access to underrepresented groups, logistical tips for hosting your own virtual tournament, a sample schedule, and more.

Each year, six students who win the district award are selected as finalists for the William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year award. District deadlines vary, but winners must be reported to the national office by April 16Submit a nomination »
Student Service Award » The National Exemplary Student Service award is given annually to a student who serves their school, community, city, region, or state using skills they honed through speech and debate. Coaches or administrators may nominate a student who upholds the highest standard of service for recognition. Current member students of any age are eligible! Nominate a student by January 21, 2020.

Event Spotlight: Dramatic Interpretation

In Dramatic Interpretation, students perform a cutting (a selection of one or more portions of a piece) of a play, short story, or other published work. Competitors may portray one or multiple characters and may "pop" from from one character to another. No props or costumes may be used. Performances can also include an introduction written by the student to contextualize the performance and state the title and the author.
What's unique about DI? Students must be able to convey emotion through the use of a dramatic text. DI is not all about drama. While dramatic elements are key aspects of the event, overly-sad selections are not ideal choices for performance.
