Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
April 2022
Dear Volunteers,
As we move through April, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on all of the change that has already found us this season. Spring invites change and we are so excited to see everything that continues to bloom around us - both in the Garden and in our community!
Green Team Support
We are so excited that our Green Team has returned in full force and are looking for more regular volunteers to join the following teams:
  • Dolores (Mediterranean Collection): Tuesdays, 10am-1pm
  • Alma (Celebration + Entry Garden): Thursdays, 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Yianni (Mesoamerica Collection): Thursdays, 9:45am-12:45pm
  • Ben (South Africa + New Zealand): Every other Tuesday, 9am-12pm
Now is the perfect time to join a Green Team! No experience required.

Library Updates

Library's Summer Reading Kickoff Event
June 5th, 1:30pm-3:30pm
The library will be hosting their Summer Reading Kickoff event for children on Sunday, June 5th. The event will take place on the Library Terrace and will include a special guest illustrator, drawing demo, art activity, and Summer Reading Club signups. Sharon, the Children’s librarian, is seeking two volunteers: one to help register children for the Summer Reading Club and one to help children at the art activity station. Help with setup would also be appreciated. The shift will be 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Sign-up here, or contact Sharon with any questions.
New Day Open
The Library is adding Tuesdays to their open hours beginning on Tuesday, May 10th, and are seeking library reception volunteers for those shifts. Library reception shifts are from 10am-1pm, and from 1pm-4pm. Enjoy the library's vast collection of horticulture books while welcoming visitors to the library!

Bean Sprouts Seeking More Volunteers
Our Youth Education team is seeking some more support with the Bean Sprouts program. Tasks include providing drop-in families with tools, supplies, and activity stations so they can make the most of the Garden together. Volunteers help with set-up, welcoming families, being a friendly resource, and general support.

Bean Sprouts is often the first exposure many children have to the Botanical Garden - it's up to us to make sure that the impact lasts!

Tuesdays & Thursdays: 9:45am-12:30pm
Saturdays: 11:30am-2:00pm, 2:00pm-4:30pm

In Memoriam

We are deeply saddened by the passing of two long-term SFBG Volunteers.
This month we gathered to celebrate the life of Joanne Taylor, a longtime volunteer and good friend of the Garden. She had many skills which she shared with the Garden - her photographs graced years' worth of monthly plant highlights on the bulletin boards at the gates, and for years her woodworking skills went to creating a warm and functional office environment as she built custom bookshelves, desks, tables, dividers, and more. Joanne was a docent for many years and volunteered in various capacities over the years, including serving on the Board as Docent Council president. We were grateful to take a moment to honor all of the time Joanne has contributed to the Garden and will miss her very much.
This month we also learned of the passing of a longtime nursery volunteer, Paul Santens. Paul was incredibly kind, gracious, and a pleasure to be around. He often helped out with the monthly plant sale and always had a smile on his face. Over the last two years under the supervision of past SFBG horticulturist Jason Martinez, Paul planned and planted a garden surrounding the Dutch Windmill on the east and north sides. His legacy will live on in the blooms that Paul shared with the Garden, and he will be greatly missed.

Slices of Joy

  • It was a truly magnificent Magnolia season, the Garden saw a record-breaking 134,799 total visits between January and March, 2022!

  • This month we celebrated the closing of Erin E Hunter's beautiful art exhibit, Wild Nectar: Paintings of Flora and Pollinators. This exhibit has been in the library since January and was our first on display since the pandemic. Catch it up in the Library until Saturday, April 30!

  • No matter the weather, the Youth Ed program has been out in the Children's Garden tending to the space. Most recently, 40 teens from SF Waldorf School pulled wheelbarrows of weeds, spread mountains of mulch, placed four raised beds, and moved 32 straw bales to create seating and activity areas just east of the Children's Garden. This will allow us to accommodate larger groups than ever!

Thank you for all that you do! See you in the Garden soon.
Warmly,
Jenn
