Registration Advising coming up next week!

Information about the Department of Art Registration Advising Fair was sent out to undergraduate art students via email, and contains your specific appointment date and time.  It also asks that you complete a form prior to the fair.  Regstration Advising will take place on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30, in the SAB Commons.

Visualizing the Self In Flux

Chaehee Yoon and Jessica Scott are participating in an academic conference this weekend for the Liberal Arts Collective Biennial Conference at Penn State University Park.  The theme of the conference is " Visualizing The Self In Flux" and they were asked to exhibit the show they curated together last semester at Herter gallery called "A/E: Body in Flux". Their show for the conference will feature work by Kathryn Fanelli, Benjamin Heller, Tony Reamer, Vick Quezada, Coe LaPossey, Jessica Scott, Chaehee Yoon and Xuan Pham. They are also holding a panel on how the themes of the conference intersect with their artistic and curatorial practices. They were awarded a travel grant by the Graduate School to attend
the conference and bring the work.

Susan Jahoda and her collective, as associated artists for Culture Push, were invited to be guest editors for their on-line journal Culture Push, Push/Pull #9.

PUSH/PULL is an online journal sponsored by Culture Push. PUSH/PULL is a virtual venue that allows us to present a variety of perspectives on civic engagement, social practice, and other issues that need attention. PUSH/PULL will help to situate the Fellows and the work they do within a critical discourse, and act as a forum for an ongoing dialogue between the Fellows, the Culture Push community, and the world at large.  The UMass Amherst Department of Art invites you to an Open House for prospective students! Take a tour of the Studio Arts Building, meet Art Department faculty, and get feedback on your portfolio in advance of your application.
Student work will be on display throughout our building. Featured in our atrium space will be a special project by recent graduate Elena Olson. Elena will be on hand at the opening to discuss her project and share her experiences as an art student at UMass Amherst.

This event is scheduled in conjunction with UMass Admissions’ final Fall Visit Day for 2019. All are welcome, even if the Admissions event fills up; no registration is required for the Art Department Open House. Please call our office at 413-545-6937 with any questions.

Fielding: Goldenrod, An Exploration of Connections, is the first Pop-Up Exhibition organized by the University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA) and the UMass Natural History Collections (NHC), curated by Emily Tareila (MFA, Studio Arts, 2019). This inaugural collaborative project brings an artist’s perspective to the Natural History Collections and offers a new way for students and the public to engage with the natural world, and with the rich collections NHC has to offer.

Colleen Keough 

Creation Myth, a new video/animation work by Colleen Keough will be screened as part of Manifest Dismantling.

Manifest Dismantling includes short experimental moving image works by artists living, working, or are from either the United States or Ireland. Though far apart in distance, the citizens of both countries share serious consequences from this “dismantling.” Presented over the course of two evenings, with the first night dedicated to Climate Collapse and second night relating to Borders, these works introduce creative means of engaging with our current states of crisis, introducing novel perspectives as we craft new methods of collective understanding and working together in a time of panic.

MA Student Jonathan Wilhelm created an animation in oil paint that showcases his skills learned at UMass in his undergraduate studies through animation and painting courses.  This is a music video for the local band Wayfaring Soul which has been featured on Lazer 99.3 during locals music hour. Click on the video to see his amazing work.

FRAME 2020

This juried call is open to all Department of Art undergraduate majors and minors. Videos and Animations should be 10 minutes or less in duration. We may consider work that exceeds the 10 minute limit on a case by case basis. Selected works will be screened during the Spring 2020 semester, on the Screen@SAB monitor, located on the second floor commons area in the Studio Arts Building. 

Deadline for submission is December 15th, 2020.

The Fall 2019 HFA Here to Career ("H2C") Series, hosted by the College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA), is a six week career and internship-skills workshop series geared toward HFA students that teaches students strategies to help successfully navigate the job/internship search and application process.  Free dinner is provided at every session and students who attend all six sessions are eligible to receive a $20 Gift Card and Certificate of Completion.

John Wilmerding Internship
National Gallery of Art

Applications are now open for John Wilmerding Internships for 2020-2021. The John Wilmerding Fund for Education in American Art supports two internships - one in American art and one in digital interpretation. These programs are focused on providing institutional training to students who are interested in pursuing a museum career. Both programs will run for 9 months in Washington, D.C.

Blacklist Journal is currently seeking submissions from talented student writers and artists in graduate and undergraduate programs across the country. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to have their works published.

We are a student-run publication seeking work that balances clarity, experimentation, and bite.  We publish fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and all forms of visual art that can be rendered in a 2-D still or moving format.
