Message from the Chair

Laurel Franzen, Ph.D.

It’s been another milestone year for LMU Accounting! Our students won first place in the Deloitte Audit Innovation Challenge. The Accounting Society held its 40th Annual Banquet and awarded $269,000 in scholarships. We launched an M.S. in Taxation program and teamed up with Deloitte Tax to offer full-tuition scholarships for diverse applicants. We also held a number of successful events on campus such as Meet the Firms. I hope you enjoy reading the stories in this newsletter which highlight the contributions and achievements of our students, faculty, alumni, donors and industry partners. On behalf of the entire LMU Department of Accounting, have a wonderful holiday season and we hope to see you soon!

Accounting Society Banquet Celebrates 40 Years

The LMU Accounting Society held its 40th Annual Banquet to honor and recognize top accounting students, faculty and generous donors. Under the theme, "Celebrating Leaders as a Force for Good," scholarships totaling $269,000 were awarded to 39 accounting students. More

Jade Chen, Ph.D.

Jade Chen joined the LMU Department of Accounting in fall 2022 as a tenure-track assistant professor. She's excited to explore new research topics with colleagues and integrate more data analytics into the accounting curriculum. More

Deloitte Tax Diversity Scholarship

LMU and Deloitte teamed up to launch the Deloitte Tax Diversity Scholarship, which covers the full cost of tuition for underrepresented students enrolling in LMU's new M.S. in Taxation. More

Faculty Highlights

James Plečnik was promoted to associate professor; Nancy Coster was promoted to full clinical professor; and Terry Wang was promoted to clinical associate professor.
Tony Menendez received the Best Innovation for Teaching Award at AAA's 26th Annual Ethics Research Symposium for his paper, "Analyzing the Fraud at Halliburton."
Tim Haight received the Best Research Paper Award at AAA's 26th Annual Ethics Research Symposium for his paper, "An Examination of Online Cheating Among Business Students Through the Lens of the Dark Triad and Fraud Diamond."

My Journey from LMU Student to Controller

The Paul A. Grosch Lecture Series welcomes accounting alumna Sara Mijares Del Fium '03, vice president and controller for SoCalGas. Prior to joining SoCalGas in 2020, Sara held various roles at PwC that included time in Los Angeles, London and Mexico. She is a CPA and serves on the Board of Regents and Board of the Latino Alumni Association at LMU. A first-gen student, Sara will discuss her career journey from the bluff to controller at the nation's largest natural gas distribution utility, and share tips, advice and lessons she's learned along the way.
