Tug of War
The United Methodist Church has been fighting over LGBTQ rights for its entire 50-year existence. In March, that battle took a turn when the General Conference voted to pass the “Traditional Plan,” which reinforces the church’s ban against same-sex marriage and gay clergy. But protesters of that policy are defending a tradition, too, writes Heather White, a Puget Sound visiting associate professor, who explains that LGBTQ-inclusive Methodist beliefs have their own history within the denomination.
