Indigenous Studies grant to transform humanities at FLC

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Fort Lewis College a three-year $950,000 grant to fund institutional capacity building and development of the Native American & Indigenous Studies Department.

Fort Lewis College saw an astounding jump in first-year student retention—from 62% in 2019 to 68% in Fall 2020—just as the College was heading into a full pandemic school year. The Center of Southwest Studies exhibit, Selections from The Durango Collection®, features three original textiles that are now part of the Pendleton Preservation Series, a unique collection that recreates historic weavings from across the Americas.

Through the partnership with Pendleton, a portion of the sales from each blanket helps fund Native American art and education programming and outreach at the FLC Foundation and CSWS.
