New ‘Top Docs’ addresses managing stress, anxiety during times of unrest & uncertainty
The latest edition of the Medical Association of Georgia’s (MAG) ‘Top Docs’ show addresses ways that patients and physicians and allied health care professionals and staff can manage stress and anxiety and their overall mental health during periods of unrest and uncertainty.
It features Mark Hyman Rapaport, M.D. – the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Reunette W. Harris Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and the chief of Psychiatric Services at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.
Dr. Rapaport discusses…
– Some of the mental health issues that have emerged or been exacerbated as a result of the pandemic
– How the recent social unrest that is related to race and equality can affect one’s mental health
– How being isolated affects people
– How COVID-19 has affected health care workers
– What Emory is doing to support its workforce and the general population during the pandemic from a mental health standpoint
– His suggestions for front line health care workers and EMT’s who are dealing with a lot of death and higher acuity patients
– The signs of PTSD, and how it affects health care workers
– His suggestions for people who are feeling sadness, grief or anxiety 
– His advice to help people remain physically and mentally healthy
– How to help children who cannot see their family and friends or participate in activities (e.g., going to summer camp or the neighborhood swimming pool)
– The increase in substance use and abuse and domestic violence
– How telehealth has been used during the pandemic
– What he sees as the most important mental health issues in the “new normal”
A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Rapaport has written more than 180 articles for peer-reviewed publications, including the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Neuropsychopharmacology. He is a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, the Psychiatric Research Society, the Collegium International Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP), and the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. It is also worth noting that Dr. Rapaport is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the CINP.

MAG has won two awards for the show, including an American Association of Medical Society Executives Profiles of Excellence Award and a Health Information Resource Center Digital Health Award.
This is Dr. Rapaport’s fourth appearance on ‘Top Docs.’
