Academic Expectations

Academic integrity is taken very seriously at Miami University. You may find different expectations at Miami about academic integrity and dishonesty than you have had in your previous schooling, particularly when it comes to writing and using information from sources.
You are expected to read the academic integrity policies in the Graduate Student Handbook and we encourage you to ask your professors about any areas of academic integrity that you do not understand. Your professors will appreciate your questions! It is important to remember that you can maintain academic integrity by forming good habits such as:
  • attending class regularly
  • studying in between classes
  • meeting with your professor during office hours
  • asking questions and being excited about learning

Tips on how to achieve academic success:

  1. Read the Graduate Student Policies and be familiar with university expectations.
  2. Attend classes regularly and actively participate in discussions and group projects. You offer a unique perspective that we want to hear!
  3. Explore Miami culture and connect with your classmates, friends and professors inside and outside the classroom to expand your network of associates.
  4. Meet with your graduate advisor at least once a semester. They can help you define your career development and help with your future goals.
  5. Get involved outside the classroom, such as offering to volunteer on research projects with your professors or volunteer with your professional association. This will help enhance your resumé.
  6. Practice speaking English as much as possible. Talk to your professors and peers, use the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, and check out the Graduate Student Association and/or the Graduate Students of Color Association. These things will build your confidence!

Campus Regulations

There are rules that every person at Miami needs to live by:

1. It is illegal to purchase or drink alcohol until a person is 21 years old. In addition, you may not buy drinks for others under 21. There are serious penalties if underage students are caught with alcohol. If you have two serious or three minor alcohol infractions, you could be suspended and asked to leave Miami University.
 2. Smoking is prohibited everywhere on campus and in public places such as restaurants, airports, etc. in the United States. You could be fined for smoking anywhere on the Miami campus, indoors or outdoors, so you may want to consider quitting smoking now if you are a smoker.
3. Although it is legal to own a weapon in the United States with the right permits, weapons are not allowed on campus. Weapons include firearms, knives, fireworks, pellet guns, BB guns, paintball guns, etc.
There are other rules that you will learn during orientation, but these are three of the most important rules for students coming from outside the U.S. to know.

Graduate Student iPOL Profiles

When you arrive at Miami University for international student orientation, you will have a designated iPOL to help you throughout orientation. Here is your iPOL's:
"I'm Jackie, a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. I come from Baotou, China, a city, famous for the Little Sheep Hot Pot. When transiting from Kinesiology to Engineering last summer, I was facing the biggest opportunity and challenge in my academic life. It made me excited about the explorations in the future. Playing the accordion, drums, piano, and ukulele satisfy my mental needs; baking, running, and Zumba color my recreational life. I'm a big fan of mystery movies - you never know how strong your brain is. Thus, trust yourself and be confident whenever encountering difficulties. That's how your life becomes more meaningful."
Next issue, we will be covering the following topics: Registering for Classes, Academic Transcripts, Official English Test Score Report, Graduate Assistantships, Student Employment and Graduate Student Highlights. Stay tuned!
