Gwinnett Place CID Strengthens Leadership Bonds in Boston

In mid-September, GPCID’s board chair Leo Wiener, vice chair Trey Ragsdale, and executive director Joe Allen, alongside 82 representatives from Gwinnett leadership, the county’s professional community and community leaders joined the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce on its Strategic Leadership Visit (SLV) to Boston, Massachusetts. Attendees met with the region’s local officials, corporate executives and community leaders to glean best practices for economic development, talent advancement, mobility, parks, the arts and community redevelopment from the perspective of one of the nation’s most historic and respected metro communities.
GPCID staff helped organize programming for the three redevelopment programming sessions during the visit. These sessions highlighted the need for communities to create more livable, resilient, sustainable and equitable places from dying, spread-out suburban strip malls to isolated and underutilized warehouses.
David Dixon of Stantec, nicknamed the “guru of suburban retrofit”, opened the conversation with examples of how communities are improving through redevelopment and planning to better align with the desires and values of today’s communities.

Boston’s Metropolitan Area Planning Council shared how the re-envisioning and remaking of their struggling commercial retail strip centers provided an opportunity to meet the region’s housing, mobility, affordability, and other challenges in a sustainable and economically successful manner.

While in Somerville, the group experienced a real-life case study of how a public-private partnership converted a former Ford Motor Assembly Plant and struggling 1980s retail mall into Assembly Row, a thriving destination featuring state-of-the-art office space, 800K+ square feet of retail and amenities, 25+ dining options and is home to more than 2,300 residents; all connected to a six-acre riverfront park.

Provide Input for the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Freight Mobility Plan

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) - is seeking public participation for the 2024 Atlanta Region Freight Mobility Plan. The survey, which will collect individuals’ experiences sending freight and receiving deliveries across the region, will close on October 28.

Please participate in this five- to 10-minute survey about your experience with shipping and deliveries in the Atlanta region. Please click through to the end of the survey as the most important component, the opportunity to use an interactive map to place markers on areas of issue or opportunity throughout the 20-county Atlanta region, is the final question. Placing these markers on the map is crucial for the ARC plan as it pinpoints specific areas of concern for future planning and improvement.

GPCID Thanks Russell Landscaping for Keeping the District Clean and Beautiful!

GPCID’s beautification partner Russell Landscape is installing new plants and mulch this fall as part of an initiative to keep Gwinnett Place inviting to our guests during the holiday season and all year round. In total, the CID has budgeted approximately $120,000 in landscaping improvements.

The CID also relies on Russell Landscape to conduct weekly trash pickup on the ten miles of right-of-way and the two interstate interchanges along I-85. As of September 30 2023, CID-funded efforts have removed 23.61 tons of trash and 1,040 illegal signs for this year alone!
