Transformative translation

Presidential Professor of English and Creative Writing Boris Dralyuk was recently awarded the National Book Critics Circle’s Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize for his translation of Grey Bees by Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov. Because translators have long gone underrecognized for their critical contributions to literature, this award “pushes [Dralyuk] to work even harder to bring a wide range of necessary voices into English.”

A pink and green reminder

Last week, leaders and members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. joined TU administrators to plant and dedicate a tree in honor of the first National Pan-Hellenic Council sorority founded at TU. AKA is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. The Theta Xi chapter began at TU on March 2, 1974. “Next year will be 50 years since we chartered this chapter,” said Cheryl Ceasar (BS ’75). “We were small in number, but we were mighty.”

Mapping the road to recovery

Austin Stewart is a third-year law student and a 2022-23 Albert Schweitzer Fellow seeking to connect individuals charged with low-level drug offenses with the recovery resources available in the Tulsa area. “My Albert Schweitzer project has given me vital experience with representing clients charged with drug crimes both in a legal and rehabilitative manner,” Stewart said, “as well as the opportunity to learn how to advocate holistically for my future clients’ needs.”

Education as health care

Albert Schweitzer Fellow Catherine Browne is a nurse anesthesia doctoral candidate whose project addresses chronic disease and high blood pressure management and prevention with clients at the Tulsa Dream Center’s Good Samaritan Clinic. “The goal is to provide information on implementing a healthy diet and exercise and to educate participants on how to manage the stressors of living with hypertension, accurately obtain blood pressure at home and bring all these aspects together to have some quality of life,” she said.
