Final reviews for the Spring 2024 Semester at the Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA) came to a close this week at our Lubbock and El Paso campuses and featured an array of diverse and imaginative work across all year levels. Over the course of the week, students presented their semester-long studio projects to internal and external reviewers, as well as their fellow classmates.
We are extremely grateful to our faculty, staff, and guest reviewers for their tremendous contributions prior to, during, and following this semester's final reviews. Without their support, none of this would be possible. We wish to congratulate all students and faculty on their incredible work this week, as well as their outstanding effort and dedication throughout this semester.
Be sure to visit the HCOA's Instagram account to see additional content from this week's final reviews!

Assistant Professor David Turturo, with the support of HCOA faculty members Adrian Anaya, lecturer; Terah Maher, assistant professor; Lauren Phillips, lecturer; Sara Velasquez Rubiano, lecturer; and Chris Taylor, associate professor, led 85 third-year students from the "Façade City" course on a class trip to Austin, Texas, February 1st - 3rd, to visit their studio site for a public natatorium on Shoal Creek.
The trip included tours of downtown Austin, the Texas Swimming Center, Barton Springs, Eddy's Deep, and Waller Creek, with expert presentations by director of the Texas Swimming Center, Ann Pickens, and environmental designers John Hart Asher II and Michelle Bertelsen, of Blackland Collaborative. As part of the trip, the city of Llano, Texas, opened its doors to our students and welcomed them to a tour of its historic courthouse and surrounding urban environs.

Assistant Professor Dr. Lingyi Qiu, collaborating as co-first author with scholars from China, has published an article titled “Computer-aided hospital layout optimization based on patient flow analysis: A case study from China,” in the Journal of Building Engineering.
The Journal of Building Engineering is a high-impact, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary, journal focused on disseminating cutting-edge research that demonstrates significant scientific novelty in the design, construction, and performance of buildings.
The study focused on optimizing the layout of the outpatient building at a general hospital in Beijing, China, to reduce patients' travel distances. The optimized layout effectively met the objectives, reducing total travel distance for general outpatients, for high-volume department patients by 4.58%, and for patients with limited mobility. It also demonstrated the potential to enhance hospital building performance and efficiency with minimal adjustments to existing structures.
