Opening John Hunt Park Recreation Center

Council Member Michelle Watkins participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the John Hunt Park Recreation Center on June 15, then five days later sponsored the first event in the facility – the Trevor Lacey Basketball Camp. Free for ages 10-17, the camp hosted more than 240 people. Council Member Watkins applauded the efforts by the City’s Parks & Recreation Department attributing to the camp’s success.

Celebrating 250 Years on July 4 in Downtown

Huntsville is ready for the country’s 250th birthday on Saturday, July 4, with a celebration that includes activities for everyone in downtown Huntsville. The events include historical reenactments, a downtown parade, a massive birthday cake, concerts and a dramatic fireworks finale in Big Spring Park. All events are free.

Community Meeting with Huntsville Utilities

Council Member Watkins will hold a second community meeting with Huntsville Utilities on Tuesday, July 28, at 5:30 p.m. at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center, 4600 Blue Spring Rd. The topic of the meeting will be a presentation by Huntsville Utilities on a proposed two megawatt, 41.5-ton battery to be located on Stringfield Road that would provide a power reserve for residents in the area.

Road Resurfacing in District 1

The City Council recently approved funding for Phase 2 of the City’s road improvement plan for the 2026 fiscal year. The improvements include resurfacing and concrete work for neighborhood roads. Several streets in D1 are part of the projects. Some of those include:

Meridian Street from Oakwood Avenue to Winchester Road
Sparkman Drive from Pulaski Pike to Blue Spring Road
Winchester Road from Meridian Street to Valhalla Funeral Home

City Leaders, Huntsville Schools Collaborating

The City Council and Huntsville City Schools (HCS) held a joint session June 1 to discuss collaboration between the City and the school system as Huntsville’s population continues to grow. Topics discussed at the meeting included the City's annual study on demographics and population growth trends, the HCS capital plan and a proposed tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Touring Construction at Alabama A&M

Council Member Watkins recently took a hard hat tour of the construction at her alma mater Alabama A&M University's (AAMU) new Science and Student Amenities buildings.

The Science building will house classrooms and laboratories for the physics, biology and chemistry departments while increasing the current academic STEM footprint on campus and supporting AAMU's growing science, technology, engineering and math programs.

The Student Amenities building will be a central hub for student engagement, services and social life – bridging A&M's east and west campuses across Meridian Street.

'Inside Huntsville' Interview

Council Member Watkins recently joined host Brenda Martin for an interview on HSV TV’s "Inside Huntsville." During this segment, Council Member Watkins shared about her start in public service and current priorities and projects in District 1 while reflecting on what it means to be a civic leader.

Working on Widening Winchester

Even though construction has not yet started, the City is continuing to work on the widening of 2.25 miles of Winchester Road between Dominion Circle and Naugher Road. The current focus of the project is securing rights of way along the planned widening, which will be followed by utility relocation.

Park and Recreation Month Means Fun

Nationally, July is Park and Recreation Month. In Huntsville, that translates to mean lots of fun. The City’s Parks & Recreation Department will roll out a series of popular family activities sure to make the summer’s highlight reel, culminating with Light Up the Night in Big Spring Park on Friday, July 31.
