Emergency Medicine
Annual E-Letter

Dear UCSD DEM Family, Friends, and Colleagues:
On behalf of the UCSD Department of Emergency Medicine, I want to wish you all a happy and joyous holiday season!
Looking back, 2024 has been a remarkable year for our Department. Following the acquisition of Alvarado Hospital, our faculty assumed ED services for the newly renamed UCSD Health East campus this Fall. Our Department is now responsible for over 200,000 acute care patient visits annually over a 2-county region! Our Education and Research programs also remain a point of tremendous pride, and this year saw our inclusion in the prestigious Blue Ridge rankings for NIH funding.
We now have nearly 100 full-time faculty leading our clinical, education, and research programs. This year also marked an important milestone for 3 of our esteemed faculty – Karen Van Hoesen, Steve Hayden, and Gary Vilke - who all retired from active academic practice and transitioned to emeritus in June. Their accomplishments and contributions to our Department, UCSD, and our specialty are legendary and they will be missed, though we wish them all the best in their well-deserved retirement!
Please read below for more on highlights this past year (or visit our website at Emergency Medicine) and as always, thank you for your support and interest of our Department.

Under his leadership, Cal-ACEP has had significant wins including an increase in Medi-Cal rates despite a very tight State budget, as well as the recently passed Proposition 35 that protects healthcare funding.
