Sanford Graduation: Best Thesis

SOCIAL POLICY
Mary Monti (PPS'23) won the 2023 Best Honors Thesis for her research looking into regional differences in high school textbooks to assess how different perspectives might help shape different political beliefs and ideologies. She worked closely with Sanford professor Kristin Goss to delve into this topic, and related fields, seeking to understand the promotion of democracy and state-level manifestations of what it means to be a good citizen. She also worked closely with Professor Eric Mlyn.

Sanford Graduation: Child Policy Research

HEALTH POLICY/SOCIAL POLICY
The Child Policy Research Certificate offers Duke undergraduates a chance to explore child and family policy issues through interdisciplinary study while working closely with faculty members to conduct original research on real-world policy issues. 2023 included seven graduates in the program, each focusing on aspects of health and social policies in childhood development.

Enhancing Trust During Complex Health Care Transformation

HEALTH POLICY
Healthcare in North Carolina has undergone a transformation towards value-based care, presenting new challenges to patients and providers. Sanford student Jillian Ryan (MPP’24) and co-author David Anderson explore the complexity of the healthcare system, the lack of patient understanding, and the need for trust-building measures. The article emphasizes the importance of clear communication, simplification of health insurance terminology, and the involvement of patient navigators to assist individuals in making informed choices. The authors suggest enhancing existing structures, such as hospital committees and ethics review boards, to strengthen patient trust. Ultimately, healthcare providers much pursue a patient-centered approach as this transformation continues.

NICHD Awards Grant to Sanford Partnership Focused on Adolescent Wellness Factors

Christina Gibson-Davis, in partnership with esteemed colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh, has been awarded a grant of approximately $2.7 million from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

This collaboration aims to advance research on the relationship between economic well-being, wealth, adolescent functioning and mental health. University of Pittsburgh researchers Portia Miller, Jamie Hanson, and Elizabeth Votruba-Drzal bring their extensive expertise to this collective project. Read more about this project.

Lansford Named Distinguished Professor

Jennifer E. Lansford has been named the S. Malcolm Gillis Distinguished Research Professor of Public Policy in the Sanford School of Public Policy, effective July 1. Lansford was honored at a May 4 reception recognizing new distinguished professors at Duke University. Read more about this award.

Mohanan Selected by Duke University as Bass Chair

Manoj Mohanan has been named by Duke University as a Bass Chair in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching and research. Mohanan will be the Creed C. Black Professor of Public Policy, effective July 1, for a five-year term. He will become a lifetime member of the Bass Society of Fellows. Read more about this award.

Johnson Appointed Faculty Research Fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research

Matthew Johnson has been appointed as a faculty research fellow by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Following a call for nominations in January, Johnson is among the 68 new affiliates appointed by the NBER. Read more about this fellowship.

Richard Burr retired recently from public service after serving five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1995-2005) and three in the U.S. Senate (2005-2023). He came to Duke’s campus to speak to students in Professor Jon Rosenwasser’s Master of National Security Policy course, PubPol 890: Promise and Peril of US Intelligence. While on campus, he spoke with Duke Sanford School of Public Policy Dean Judith Kelley about bipartisanship, political polarization, and the importance of passing down to children and grandchildren the tradition of service.
