Meet ELL Tutor and Learner pair Carol and Marionth!
|
Marionth is from Venezuela and moved to the United States in 2017. Marionth’s main reason for studying English is to be able to communicate with the teachers at her son’s school and support him in his schoolwork. She also wants to grow professionally and someday go back to college. A friend recommended NALC and encouraged her to start taking classes. Marionth said that the tutors and staff at NALC
“help you in all aspects, not only with topics like learning English, but they also want to see that you are successful and that you meet all your goals. They guide you to reach that success you are looking for.”
Marionth works with Carol, a retired teacher and university program director. After talking to some friends about their experiences volunteering with NALC, she decided it would be a fulfilling thing to do during her retirement. Carol said,
“I wanted to give something back to my community while also helping people learn about this country, its customs, and its language. I also love providing others a ‘safe’ place where they can begin trying to express themselves in English and feel supported while doing so.” She tries to make her lessons fun and rewarding. Carol feels fortunate to have tutored many students at NALC and hopes to continue.
Your donations and volunteer time truly make this work possible.

Meet Maggie Yandell, ELL Tutor Program Manager!
|
What made you apply to NALC?
I applied to work at NALC because the program aligned so well with my passions. I love learning and teaching language, and I have seen how impactful it can be to make friendships and connections across cultures. The ELL tutoring program brings together English language learners with local volunteer tutors. In addition to learning and teaching English, learners and tutors also get to meet someone from Nashville who they might not have in their everyday lives!
What's a moment from working at NALC that brings you joy?
I think it’s really rewarding when we can match learners and volunteers who have something special in common. Whether it is their career or another interest, it is cool to see volunteers and learners building connections and friendships!
Thank you for your hard work and dedication Maggie!
