Cash remains an indispensable part of the payment system.
Cash remains an indispensable part of the payment system.
Dear ATMIA Member,
As we continue to face the challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic, our thoughts are particularly with our Victorian members, who are presently dealing with the uncertainty of a second wave. As has been the case throughout the entire pandemic, ATMIA is committed to working with the Industry to secure a successful future. Should you have any concerns or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ATMIA will be holding its Strategic Direction Committee on 19th August at 4pm AEST, where it will discuss the details of an ATM & Cash revival plan, update report from the AP region, hear from the RBA on Consumer Payment Behaviour in Australia survey and the Next Generation Banknote Programme, and receive an overview of current trends of crimes against ATMs from NSW Police.

ATMIA’s promotion of a position paper to see a legislated mandate for acceptance of cash for retail transactions continues with great success. We have contacted over 15 organisations and associations and look forward to building a strong coalition to see action taken to secure the role of cash as a universal payment option. To read the position paper, click here.

Last month a major sporting event held in Western Australia saw some 20,000 spectators attend, with all food and retail outlets at the Optus Stadium given the direction to not accept cash and only accept cash cards or contactless payment options. This represents a significant threat to the security and stability of the payments system and ATMIA has been working hard to bring this to the attention of relevant WA authorities including the WA Sports and Recreation Minister to ensure similar decisions are not made at future events.

As mentioned earlier, ATMIA is committed to providing value and strong advocacy to its members. Where you think we can do more, feel free to contact me anytime sandra.smith@atmia.com.

Stay safe and stay strong.
Thanks

Sandra Smith
