Dear NYU Steinhardt Community,
On Veteran's Day, we honor those who have served in the US military.
Historically, NYU has always been a welcoming community for students who served in the US armed forces. In fact, after World War II, a record number of returning veterans enrolled at NYU, and those numbers only increased in the coming decade.
Pulitzer Prize-winning memoirist Frank McCourt (BA ’57) was among those who served in the Korean War and gained admission to NYU through the GI Bill’s education benefit. A graduate of our Department of Teaching and Learning, McCourt spent his career as a New York City public school teacher and never forgot the kindness of Florence Beeman, an admissions counselor, who admitted him to our school, though he lacked a high school diploma.
In this video, McCourt speaks about the role that education played in his life and the unique opportunities that his NYU Steinhardt education afforded him.
To all our students who have served, we are honored that you chose to study at NYU Steinhardt. If you are an online student or reside on one of our campuses, please know that we are always here to support you in any way that we can.
We remain forever grateful for your service.
Sincerely,
Jack H. Knott, Dean
